Introduction

Whether you’ve purchased yourself a Toyota or a Lexus with the underrated 2JZ-GE engine under the hood, you’re most probably already aware of what the 2JZ can achieve.

Sure, your 2JZ-GE isn’t going to feel like the much-loved 2JZ-GTE in stock form, but with an NA-T turbo upgrade, you’ll be amazed at how quickly and effortlessly you’ll be able to achieve some impressive power figures.

The 2JZ-GE often gets overlooked for its more impressive sibling, but with ever-rising prices of the 2JZ-GTE, it makes more sense than ever for the GE engine to get the turbocharged lovin’ that it deserves.

Thankfully, the 2JZ-GE is incredibly similar to the GTE, integrating the same rods and crankshaft, with the discernable difference between the two powerplants falling to the choice of pistons.

So, despite being naturally aspirated, Toyota designed both 2JZ engines with forced induction in mind and they’re both up there with the most robust stock blocks that money can buy.

Although the pistons are different, they’re still more than capable of handling respectable power figures, and it’s not until you go chasing huge numbers that you’ll maybe need to consider opting for forged pistons.

We’ve seen setups of up to 1,000 WHP achieved from the stock 2JZ-GTE bottom-end, and we’ve also witnessed a GE run a 9 ¼ sec quarter-mile from a motor with 220k miles on the clock!

Although there’s no shortage of turbo kits for the 2JZ-GE engine, it can get a little confusing when you’re looking at the options on the market, so we’ve written this guide to clarify which kit(s) will be best for your needs.

There’s an influx of cheap ‘Chinese’ knock-off kits on the market, and although these may work fine for some owners, we’re more interested in the companies committed to putting their names to their setup.

We’ll cover the full range of products that we feel are worth considering, from budget through to premium, to help you find the perfect NA-T turbo kit to help you make the most out of your currently underachieving 2JZ-GE engine.


2JZ-GE vs 2JZ-GTE Differences

Since you’re already reading this article, you’ll undoubtedly know about the legendary 2JZ-GTE, most notably found in the MKIV Toyota Supra.

This factory-turbocharged equivalent of the naturally-aspirated 2JZ-GE engine has earned legendary status and has become quite possibly the most desirable engine within the drifting and drag racing scenes worldwide.

One of the main differences between the two engines lies within compression. GE’s have a 10.0:1 compression ratio, compared to the 8.5:1 of the GTE, due to a thicker head gasket (.2mm for GE, 1.6mm for GTE) and lower-compression pistons in the GTE.

The GE manifold is designed to provide the most torque possible to make up for the lack of forced induction, which assists in the lower bracket of the RPM band.

Both heads are slightly different, with the GTE having larger intake ports, and the GE having larger exhaust ports, which has led some enthusiasts convinced that the GE head is capable of flowing better than the GTE head.

Other significant variations between the two engines include the injectors and airflow sensors, the ignition system, and the port spacing and studs on the manifolds.


How Much Power Can The 2JZ-GE Handle?

Since the 2JZ-GE runs at 10:1 compression, we don’t recommend going above 7-8 PSI of boost before you begin having to adjust things like ignition timing.

We always recommend opting for an upgraded FMIC to get the most out of your setup right away, especially if you intend to run more than 5-6 PSI.

Once you consider going over around 350-400 WHP, you’ll want to begin considering an upgrade to your fuelling systems, such as the pump and injectors.

The stock compression of the 2JZ-GE will also likely limit you to around 400-450 WHP reliably before you need to consider upgrades such as a thicker head gasket.

If you have big-power goals, there will unsurprisingly be a lot more to consider.

Although several owners have had 800 WHP from the stock rods and pistons for several years, we’d consider upgrading them as a precaution.


2JZ-GE Turbo Kits

Although many owners opt to DIY their NA-T upgrade, there’s no question that the off-the-shelf kits on the market are the far better suited for those of us that are a little less talented in the fabrication department!

With the wide range of various options available, there’s a 2JZ-GE kit out there to fit every enthusiasts’ requirements, and we’ll help you decide which one is best for you in this guide.

Our comment: Another popular offering to the market is Driftmotion with this good quality offering, which features Garrett internals.

We’ve found mixed opinions on this kit, with some owners stating that modifications were needed to ensure a perfect fit, which means it’s not necessarily going to be a ‘bolt-on and go’ affair.

There are reports of a weak wastegate included in the kit, so it may be worth considering sourcing an alternative.

Despite many positive reports, when issues have arisen, some owners have found Driftmotion hard to contact for a resolution.

All in all, this provides plenty of reasonable, solid choices, and the majority of feedback for Driftmotion has been positive.

They have various turbo options available, all the way up to 750whp.

It’s worth noting these kits don’t include the FMIC or piping, so that will need to be a consideration.

This kit features an impressively crafted manifold featuring good-quality welding, alongside a highly-regarded intercooler and piping.

There are various turbo and fitment options to decide on the perfect setup for your needs.

Many owners have successfully run these kits long-term on high-mileage 2JZ-GE NA-T engines with nothing but praise.

Despite many negative remarks regarding CXRacing’s products online, they had a substantial overhaul in recent years, and they’ve earned themselves an excellent reputation since.

For the quality, fitment, and price, you will struggle to find a better all-rounder than the CXRacing kit.

Our comment: This turbo kit from Turbonetics was one of the first to reach the 2JZ-GE market.

Although some owners have had success with it, there also seem to be many reports of issues. For the price, we can’t justify the added value over the cheaper kits above.

We have also heard reports of the kit recently becoming discontinued, so if you feel it is the right choice for your needs, we strongly advise checking this first.

Getting spare parts for a discontinued kit can become frustrating further down the line.

Although many owners have been happy with the Turbonetics kit, we think there are much better opportunities for the price on our list.

Our comment: SupraStore has come through with another Supra-only 2JZ-GE kit (apologies, non-Supra owners!)

We’ve noticed many mixed opinions on these kits, with most owners speculating that they’re XSPower parts.

If this is the case, given that SupraStore doesn’t have the best of reputations when it comes to delivering the goods or customer service, we would personally be looking into either buying directly from XSPower or looking at CXRacing for a similar budget.

There are reports of owners out there that are pleased with the kit, but we recommend further research if you’re considering purchasing.

Our comment: XSPower’s kit is highly regarded within the budget 2JZ scene and has seen increasing popularity over the years, with owners racking up thousands of miles with very few issues.

Although this may initially seem far cheaper than the CXRacing kit, the price doesn’t include the FMIC piping.

Regardless, this is another fantastic, newly revamped kit to compete with CXRacing on the market.

The XSPower kit could make a great option if you are on a smaller budget.

Manufacturer description:Your stock GE motor makes 180WHP on a good day. The stock GTE motor puts down about 285WHP if the stock twins are in great shape“.

Install this XS-POWER 2JZ GE / GTE turbo kit and boost to 9PSI on stock internals, head gasket, and injectors. You’ll be putting down 330WHP. No need to open the motor or mess with the injectors or tranny at 9PSI, just run 93 Octane and a fuel tuning system“.

Our comment: Turbo Specialties enter our list with one of the most expensive options on our list.

Turbo Specialties launched one of the first aftermarket 2JZ-GE kits to market as the main competitor of the SRT (Swift Racing) turbo kit. However, SRT has since gone out of business.

Although the kit includes a Garrett turbo, we’re not convinced that the T28R is the most efficient turbo for getting the most out of your 2JZ-GE, and we feel there are more suitable options in our selection.

Combine this with the fact that most owners have mentioned the kit needing some adjustments to fit correctly; we can’t justify the cost compared to some of the substantially cheaper alternatives on the market.

Our comment: It’s certainly not every day that you stumble upon a turbo kit that is for this price brand new, but FASTWAYRACER has pulled it out of the bag with one of the cheapest options on our list.

Unfortunately, there is very little to go on regarding feedback on this system, so we highly recommend checking that it suits your needs before going ahead.

One of the first things to get our alarm bells ringing is the universal piping on the intercooler, so you’ll immediately need to consider some significant adjustments to get that fitting correctly.

FASTWAYRACER has a reputation for providing poor-fitting parts, and unfortunately, as far as we can see, it appears that this kit is no exception.

With that said, you certainly get a lot of kit for your money, but we wouldn’t expect it to be premium quality.

Cheap isn’t always cheerful, especially when things start going wrong!

Lexus opted to focus on the younger car market for the IS300, veering away from their roots as solely being a luxury car manufacturer up until that time.

With a plan to offer direct competition to the likes of BMW’s 3-series firmly in their sights, they certainly had some big shoes to fill to compete with the German market leaders at the time.

Enter the IS300.

We’d forgive you for thinking that a luxury car manufacturer wasn’t going to stand much of a chance competing with a perfectly-refined German legend such as the 3-series.

But, luckily for Lexus, they had a trick up their sleeve.

We’re willing to bet you haven’t heard of Nobuaki Katayama, but when Lexus realized the mammoth task ahead, they knew that he was going to be the perfect Chief Engineer for their ambitious new project.

With a history that spanned right the way back to the Toyota AE86, Katayama later had substantial involvement with the MKIV Supra. Along the way, he also played a role in Toyota’s Racing Division (TRD) by engineering cars for Le Mans, the World Rally Championship, and the Sports Car World Championship.

You get the idea – you could say that this guy kinda knew his stuff, and he was the perfect person to implement the racing element into Toyota’s luxury brand.

Katayama helped produced an incredible all-around car, which featured a low curb weight along with the highly-acclaimed 2JZ engine, which made for the perfect package both in a straight line and on the twisties.

Oh, and it could also handle getting thrown sideways pretty nicely, too!

Although it had performance in mind, it still kept the luxury elements about it, which made it the perfect car for the younger generation, and also for the older owners that were prone to an occasional burnout when the wife and kids weren’t looking.

Although it has fantastic suspension out of the box, fitting a set of coilovers is capable of making this a serious contender on the canyons, or the track.

With the IS300 available in the present day with an absolute bargain price tag, they’re unsurprisingly becoming increasingly popular within the tuning scene.

Not only was the IS300 a fantastic car when it came to handling, but it also featured the much-loved 2JZ engine from the GS300.

Okay, so the 2JZ-JE may not be a match for its brother, the mighty 2JZ-GTE, but we’ve even compiled an NA-T guide for unleashing the potential of this bulletproof engine by fitting a turbo on a budget.

With most of the parts shared with the GTE, which is capable of 1,000 WHP, you’ll begin to realize just how much potential these engines have to offer, especially given the price tag of a GTE these days. You’ve gotta love the JDM tax.

However, with its ability to reach 60mph in just over 7-seconds, it’s hardly a slouch in stock form. Also, there are off-the-shelf modifications such as exhaust upgrades which will enable you to improve on that, while also giving it a much-improved sound.

So, you get the idea. The IS300 is a pretty damn impressive car, especially for the money.

However, when it comes to looks, the IS300 is somewhat… Bland.

It would appear that Lexus was pretty keen to keep their luxury mindset when it came to looks with this 5-door sedan.

So, what can we do to improve the aesthetics?

One of the most significant modifications you can do to a car is to replace the body kit completely.

For those of you that aren’t already aware, a body kit generally consists of front and rear bumpers and side skirts.

These are one of the first upgrades that drifters make to their cars, not only for looks but also for convenience.

Stock parts can become challenging to source, and they’re also challenging to repair when your friends have been screaming at you to ‘RUN THE WALL’, before it all goes a little, well. Wrong.

One of the main benefits of body kits is since they’re typically made from fiberglass or FRP. Thankfully, this means that even when exploded to smithereens, you’ll generally be able to fix them up using a repair kit and a little effort.

They also enable you to completely transform the look of your IS300, turning it from the everyday 5-door sedan into a drift-ready track weapon.

The downside with aftermarket bodykits, as most enthusiasts will already be familiar with, is that fiberglass rarely fits as well as the OEM products. For that reason, you should expect to trim or add extra fiberglass to certain areas.

Generally, the more expensive kits are a much better fit, and the cheaper ones are likely to need more work.

Adjustments with fiberglass are easy enough to do, it can sometimes just become a little time-consuming, so it’s best to prepare for needing to carry out some tweaks.

For drift cars, the cheaper kits are generally the better choice, since they’re convenient to replace when things go wrong.

Alternatively, the expensive kits are better choices for the stance scene, where quality and fitment are more critical.

However, if your budget allows, then these will undoubtedly make for insane looking drift cars, too.

Included are front and rear add-on lips to fit onto your existing OEM bumpers, along with replacement side-skirts.

JP USA has earned itself a good reputation of providing high-quality kits, and we wouldn’t expect this kit to need much modification at all.

Our comment: The next contender on our list is Japanese tuning legends, Vertex, and they certainly need no introduction.

With over 25-years in the business, Vertex is well known for providing some of the best-fitting and most stylish kits in the market, and their IS300 offering certainly doesn’t disappoint.

With a clean, OEM+ style design, this kit features a subtly aggressive stance, but still stands out from the crowd.

This kit is for those of you that have carried out a turbo conversion or a turbocharged engine swap, with the modified 30mm front bumper designed for a front-mount intercooler setup.

This kit provides a ‘deeper’ front bumper, where the FMIC-variant has been trimmed to just 30mm to allow for the additional FMIC clearance.

Our comment: We don’t feel that the wheels in this photo compliment the kit, and it could look great with something that suits the IS300 a little more.

Expect this to be another excellent-fitting, high-quality kit from one of the best brands out there.

Note that the rear bumper doesn’t include the diffuser as shown on the Vivid Racing site, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing!

We think that the front-end of this kit looks fantastic.

As we stated previously, you really can’t go wrong with Chargespeed, they are a legit JDM brand, and their quality and fitment are up there with the best.

Chargespeed has designed this kit for the JDM Altezza rear bumper, so it will require some modification to fit the US variants.

Our comment: Version Select is a lesser-known brand compared to our previous alternatives, but thankfully their IS300 kit has received excellent reviews for being excellent quality and fitment at a reasonable price.

Consisting of a full front bumper, side skirts, and a rear lip, which is again with the Altezza in mind, so will need some modification to fit.

This kit looks fantastic when fitted, and given that the price is comparable to most lip kits when you get a full front bumper, it’s well worth the money.

Our comment: There’s not much to choose from when it comes to widebody kits for the IS300, so we were stoked to see this kit from Clinched Flares.

Although the price tag might seem a little excessive, this kit is ABS plastic rather than fiberglass, which will be useful for those of you that often delaminate your tires!

The widebody adds 2” (5cm) per side at the front of the car, and 2.6” (6.5cm) at the rear, which can be handy if you’re planning for a big lock kit like Wisefab, which pushes the wheels out substantially.

These will also be perfect for those of you that are looking to fit deep-dish wheels that don’t easily fit under the stock body.

This kit features a ducktail spoiler. You can potentially save some cash by going for the non-ducktail alternative.

Jokes aside, if you’re not going to lose sleep over fitment or quality, and you want something that you can zip-tie on to provide a ground-hugging look to your IS300 on a budget, this is a great choice.

It may cost quite a bit more than the TOM’s Racing kit, but they are entirely different in every way, and for a complete wide-body kit, this certainly isn’t overpriced, especially since it’ll completely transform your IS300.

It’ll take a pretty substantial amount of work to fit this kit, and it’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’ll sure as hell be worth it for the outcome!

We would LOVE to see one of these IS300’s with smoke pouring out the rear end.

Japanese tuning house HKS have once again forced themselves to the top of our list. With incredible sound, quality and looks at a reasonable price point, the Carbon-Ti exhaust is our personal favourite.

Luckily for IS300 owners, HKS released an extremely similar product at a better price point in the Hi-Power option, so that should definitely be a consideration for those of you on a lower budget.

If you’re looking for a bargain, the Manzo exhaust has to be a strong consideration. At a price point of $220, you are going to seriously struggle to get better value for money from a brand new product.

For those of you considering adding a turbocharger to your 2JZ now, or later, the GReddy Revolution offers a 3″ diameter for increased exhaust flow. Be prepared for it to be loud, but expect to achieve maximum performance.

If you’re looking for a quiet setup, the Tanabe Touring offers a great sound and the Blitz Nur Spec certainly can’t be beaten for value.

Back in 2001, Lexus veered away from their typical focus on luxury cars and targeted the younger generation as their first real sports sedan entered the market - the IS300.

Our comment: Tein bring their latest kit which is insanely good value for money to the market. At this price point, you may assume that they’re cheaply made. However, Tein managed to reduce their costs by making these a sealed structure, meaning they are not rebuildable. Don’t let this put you off as rebuilds often cost as much as replacing! These are fantastic quality and made in Yokohama, Japan, with a typical JDM eye for quality.

Despite being more road orientated, this is also a capable track coilover featuring an impressive amount of adjustment. For the money, you’re going to struggle to get a better all-rounder than this.

These are also compatible with Tein’s awesome EDFC system which allows you to adjust the damping electronically inside the car.

BC offers various springs with this setup, including Swift Springs which will make these feel even more impressive. If you’re looking for lows, they also offer an ‘extreme low’ option. Speak with Enjuku about your needs and we have no doubt they’ll be happy to help you out.

These offer a firm, but not crashy ride which is still ideal for street use and are still capable when you head to the track. BC also offer their higher-end ER series ER Series coilovers which are a competitor for the KW V3’s if you’re intending to do mostly track use.

These are an extremely popular choice among IS300 owners and a serious competitor for the KW V3’s. It may just boil down to personal preference as to which suits you best, especially if you’re keen to maintain the JDM aspect on your car.

Our comment: Stepping into the higher end of the suspension market, APEXi bring you their upper-range N1 Evolution coilovers. Despite the serious price tag, these are undoubtedly a fantastic choice for those who are looking for a great coilover system which is more track-orientated than street.

For the price, we would be looking at comparing these to KW V3’s and the HKS Hipermax above, both of which have far more feedback with very little negative to say about them from owners. If you’re hoping to go with these but your budget doesn’t allow, we recommend checking out their cheaper ‘EXV’ option too.

With the option of swift springs available, we’d highly recommend opting for these. If you’re intending to track the car there are better options out there, but for daily driving, this is a great, affordable option.

Another set of coilovers which really stood out during our research of this article were our budget-offering – BC Racing BR’s. At under $1k, we struggle to believe you will be able to find a better coilover out there for the money. With the additional option of the upgraded swift springs available, we have no doubt that the BR’s will be perfect for your needs on a lower budget.

Sure, you’ve probably lusted after the Supra’s infamous 2JZ-GTE, but with ever-growing prices and with them becoming increasingly hard to find, tuning companies have worked to achieve a sensible compromise with your GE.

However, we’ve written this article for those of you that are ready to give your IS300’s engine some much-needed boost with this reasonably priced forced-induction addition, it’s time for some NA-T fun!

If you’re worried about the strength of these engines, be reassured that most of the parts are shared with the GTE, which is capable of 1,000whp.

While many components are identical, the pistons are one of the the only internal variations between these engines, which were made with turbocharged intentions from the factory.

There are also some rumors that the rods are thinner in the GE then the rods in the GTE.

With that being said, there are still considerable differences between the two power plants. There’s a different style inlet manifold, compression ratio, injectors, sensors, and exhaust manifold and many other variations to consider.

This, of course, means that simply bolting GTE turbos to a GE engine wouldn’t be as straightforward as most owners would like!

Featuring a well-made manifold with good-quality welding alongside a highly-regarded intercooler and piping. It includes a GT35 turbo and also offers a ball bearing upgrade for an additional $200. Alternatively, if you’re looking to use a different turbo and wastegate, you can save $220 on this package. Our comment: This may initially seem far cheaper than the CXRacing kit, but their price doesn’t include the FMIC piping or fuel tuning device. That being said, this is another fantastic, newly revamped kit to compete with CXRacing on the market.

XS Power are very highly regarded within the 2JZ scene and this kit has been popular with many IS owners over the years as they racked up thousands of miles with very few issues. This is definitely a great option if you are on a smaller budget.

Manufacturer description:Your stock GE motor makes 180WHP on a good day. The stock GTE motor puts down about 285WHP if the stock twins are in great shape.

“Install this XS-POWER 2JZ GE / GTE turbo kit and boost to 9PSI on stock internals, head gasket, and injectors. You’ll be putting down 330WHP. No need to open the motor or mess with the injectors or tranny at 9PSI, just run 93 Octane and a fuel tuning system.


Driftmotion IS300 Turbo kit

Our comment: Another popular offering to the market is Driftmotion with this good quality offering which features Garrett internals. We’ve found mixed opinions on this kit with some people saying that modifications have been needed to ensure a perfect fit, which means it’s not really a ‘bolt-on and go’ affair. There are reports of a weak wastegate included in the kit, so perhaps source your own alternative. This price does not include the FMIC or piping. Various turbo options are available, all the way up to 750whp.

Despite many positive reports, Driftmotion have also apparently been hard to contact when issues arise.

Kit includes manifold, wastegate, 4″ intake pipe, dump tube, fasteners, oil lines and fittings, gaskets, adaptor flanges for turbo and block oil lines, 60-1 turbo with ceramic coated exhaust housing and polished compressor housing, blue anodized billet backplate, all Garrett internals.

We’re confident that this is the best kit on the market for the money. A 4″ K&N filter is now included with the kit! The kit will not fit a right-hand drive vehicle without modification to the wastegate piping.

Our comment: The most expensive kit in our list has been around for quite some time. Although some owners have had success with it, there also seems to be a lot of reports of issues. For the price, we can’t justify the added value over the cheaper kits above.

We have also heard reports of the kit being discontinued, so if you feel it is the right choice for your needs then we strongly advise checking this. Getting spare parts for a discontinued kit can be very frustrating.

“Turbonetics offers complete turbo systems – from air entry to exhausting to the catalyst. The Turbonetics Turbo System is a true O.E. bolt-on that does not require “hacking” in order to install.


Turbo Specialties IS300 Turbo kit

Our comment: Turbo Specialties enter our list with the second most expensive option so far. This kit was one of the first IS300 kits to ever be released and was the main competitor of the SRT (Swift Racing) kit, however, SRT has since gone out of business. Although the kit includes a Garrett turbo, we’re not entirely convinced that the T28R is the ideal turbo for boosting your IS300, and there are definitely more suitable options in our selection.

Combine this with the fact that most owners have mentioned that the kit needs some adjustments to fit correctly, we can’t justify the cost compared to some of the substantially cheaper alternatives on the market.

Our comment: It’s certainly not every day that you stumble upon a turbo kit that is up for under $1,000 brand new, but FastWayRacer have pulled it out of the bag with the cheapest option on our list.

Unfortunately, there is very little to go on with regards to good or bad reviews on this system, so we highly recommend checking that it suits your needs before going ahead. Cheap isn’t always cheerful, especially when things start going wrong!

Customers require to upgrade the fuel pump, injector and ECU to tune the car if you set at higher PSI. This kit can max up to 550HP. To pick our winner from this choice of IS300 turbo kits we looked at a number of criteria; ease of installation, quality, popularity, upgrade potential and price point.

Based on these criteria we have chosen the CXRacing Turbo kit to be our winner.

With no big name brands stepping up to the plate in the 2JZ-GE tuning scene, it left a great opportunity for some smaller brands to take the win this time around.

If you perhaps don’t feel comfortable running the turbo or wastegate supplied within these well-priced kits, and want to go for something more reputable or powerful, it’s worth considering the CXRacing option without the turbo and wastegate.

The manifold, pipework and the rest of the CXRacing kit all have a great reputation, so fitting a fancy turbo and wastegate could well be the perfect answer.

If CXRacing doesn’t suit your preference, we’d definitely recommend considering the XS Power option.
