Choosing the best oil can become a little overwhelming with so many choices. Whether you’ve got a stock or tuned G35, we’ve got the perfect G35 oil type.

g35 oil type

Introduction And G-Series History

The G-series is the more luxurious-oriented sports car under the luxury sub-brand of Nissan – Infiniti.

Claiming the birthday of July 10th, 1990, the first-edition G20 housed the heart of a lion, the SR20DE, also found in the 180SX.

The G20, also known as the Primera, was Nissan’s first attempt at penetrating the luxury market in Europe. It got refined with incremental iterations up to 2002.

History refresher by the wayside, the third generation G-series, the G35, housed the iconic-sounding VQ35.

If that engine name is familiar, because it is the same engine found in the Nissan 350Z, the more sports-focused and oriented car, going toe to toe with the likes of the BMW E46 M3, the Honda S2000, and the Mazda RX8.

The G35 came about as either a 2-door or a sedan. It is referred to as the American Skyline. It is the luxurious design of the 350Z in more than a sense.

It didn’t only share the engine, but also the highly-regarded FM chassis platform.

Infiniti G35 Oil Type – Our Recommendations

To understand our recommendations and on what basis we are building our conclusions, it would be best to do a quick overview of what oil functions, designations, and what they represent.

While oil is known to be the lubricant for the engine, its applications and duties do not end there.

The combustion process is violent, resulting in toxic and acidic results. Generally, acids are pretty rough on the engine materials and promote corrosion.

The engine oil neutralizes those acidic results, keeping the powerplant safe. Like anything, the grit and mess that enters the engine are cleaned off by the oils containing them.

Oil also creates a barrier on the surfaces that halts the oxidation process.

Oil is understood and rated by grades. Not by A, B, or C grades, but by 0, 5, or 10 before the W, and a -20, 30, and 40.

So, for example, a 0w-20. The W refers to winter or cold starts. So what are those numbers?

The one before the W correlates to the oil’s viscosity, or thickness, at cold temperatures.

The second number is at operating temperatures, ranging from 80 to 110 degrees Celsius or 170 to 230 degrees Fahrenheit.

Oil as a lubricant changes its viscosity across the temperature operation range of the engine. Cold starts see thicker and heavier oils, and as the temperature climbs to operating temperature, the oil thins and flows.

If the oil is too thick when starting the engine, the pump has to work harder to get the oil moving, and this takes time, leaving the engine without much-needed protection while the oil is pumped from the sump.

In some cases, even, it won’t move; in older, carbureted engines, they might even fail to start.

On the other hand, having too thin oil at operating temperature can be detrimental. It could fail to provide the coating and protection necessary under load and stress.

The general rule is that going thicker for cold and thinner for operating temperatures is risky and discouraged. On the flip side, going thinner and less dense during colder conditions while thicker under operating temperatures can play it safe and secure.

Track toys and high-stress situations take the oil’s operating viscosity up to 50 and, rarely, 60. This ensures a thick coating under stress and that the oil doesn’t falter under high pressures.

Now, don’t run and get the highest SAE-rated viscosity oil; you will more likely than not just overburden your engine. One has to consider the use case of the car. Is it bone stock or lightly modified with a cold air intake?

Then, by all means, stick to the recommended OEM oil of 5W30 in the colder regions and 10W40 for hotter places with a change interval of 3750 miles or 5000 kilometers.

Maybe you’ve bought that G35 of yours for all its fun and sleek looks. Hell, even a four-door fun gun? Tacked on a supercharger or turbo upgrade? Then all the new stresses and heat require a different blend and a stronger oil. The jump from mineral, or semi-synthetic, to synthetic can be a bit of a hit on the wallet.

Below are three oil types that we have decided will suit you best in three different conditions: daily, high-performance driving and modifications, as well as the folks who reside in the colder regions of the world:

5W-30 Castrol Edge Advanced

Rated 5W-30 by the SAE, thus conforming to the standard recommendation of Infiniti’s manual for the G35.

Edge Advanced is explicitly engineered to target the robbing characteristics of oil, focusing on protection under high load without sacrificing horsepower in return or even mileage and efficiency.

It is designed to withstand the ruthlessly high temperatures of turbochargers and maintain a stable and consistent viscosity and performance.

Don’t forget, with a modified car, sometimes fractions are all required to make it past the emissions standard tests, and proper oil can lend a helping hand.

5W-30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

The 5W-30 Ultra Platinum offering by Pennzoil is the perfect balance between a high-performance oil and just that and a good old everyday run-of-the-mill oil.

Fully synthetic oil is destined to make lively engines’ lives much happier and more prolonged. It might look like a sedan, but the G35’s beating heart is a young and exciting engine, so it would appreciate the balance of Pennzoil’s Ultra Platinum oil.

0W-40 Mobil 1 European

It’s the northern part of the world and well below the water’s freezing point. The salt trucks have been at it all night, with your dear G35 slumbering in the bone-piercing breeze. The oil is thick, and the engine is labored.

In the olden days, single-grade oils were switched depending on the season. Though multi-grade oils enable you to keep your oil for both winter and summer.

Mobil 1 European is designed to be light on your car’s engine. Sure, it’s off-spec from Infiniti’s recommendation, but it’s also a lot colder out here.

This oil provides a light and flowing nature at colder temperatures but ensures a good coat and protection at higher operating temperatures to not hassle the engine.

Infiniti G35 Oil Type By Year

The Infiniti G35 came with two engines – the VQ35DE and the VQ35HR. Given the overlap during the 2007 model year, it’s worth double-checking which engine your G35 has.

How To Change Your G35 Oil

While timely oil changes are essential for optimized performance and reliability, your choice of oil might still fall subpar to your expectations.

Whatever oil you choose will pass through the car’s oil filter. If that’s clogged, used up, or damaged from an unfortunate pothole, the oil won’t do its job well as it has to make one hell of an effort going that obstacle course of a filter.

It is an excellent point to state that the part number for the filter, as stated by the manufacturer, is: 15208.

Below is a summarized guide. You will require 5 to 5.2 quarts of oil or between 4.7 to 4.9 Liters.

1. 10 and 14-mm socket wrenches
2. Oil filter wrench/adapter
3. Oil drain pan
4. Funnel
5. Latex gloves (optional)
6. Towels
7. New drain plug washer (optional)
8. Five (5) quarts of the oil your choose
9. New oil filter

It is recommended that you prepare the tools and parts to replace close to your work area beforehand to make your work more efficient and less tedious.

Also, it is worth knowing that the G35 has an underbody tray that protects the car’s underside and provides aerodynamic benefits.

Infiniti G35 Oil Change Process

  1. Firstly, remove the oil filler cap.
  2. Under the car, take the abovementioned tray off. It is held in place by 14x 10-mm bolts. This will grant you direct access to the oil pan.
  3. Set your drain pan under the drain plug. Ideally, a little in front of it, as the oil will rush out in front of it.
  4. Loosen the 14-mm drain plug. It is advised not to remove it using your wrench so that oil won’t get all over it and risk damaging the equipment.
  5. Remove the plug by hand. The oil will be pressured and will rush out when there is space to do so. The faster the plug is removed, the less messy the process is.
  6. The oil will drain within 5-7 minutes. Be patient and let as much oil remove itself as advised.
  7. After draining the oil, we move on to the oil filter. It needs a wrench or wrench adapter. It can even be loose enough to twist by hand. Note: ensure that the oil filter gasket disengages as well. Installing a new filter onto an old gasket can potentially cause problems.
  8. Clean the filter area thoroughly before replacing the new filter.
  9. Clean the drain plug, install the new washer, and re-fit the sump plug. Do not over-tighten.
  10. Fill the new filter halfway with oil, and wet the edges with oil using your fingers. This oil layer will create the suction and seal necessary to prevent leaks.
  11. Tighten the filter by hand, and then 3/4s of a turn, using the wrench. Be careful not to over-tighten again.
  12. Fill up the car with new oil, just enough to be in between the H and L marks on the dipstick. Overfilling will cause damage. Better be low and add than overfilled because that will be a wasteful process to recover from.
  13. Close the cap, start the car, and let it sit for 2 minutes. In the meantime, check for leaks. Once ensured, re-install the undertray.

Now that the car has been running recheck the oil and ensure it’s within range.

Replacing Infiniti G35 Transmission Fluid

The G35 transmission fluid is 3.1 quarts of oil. Some oils are great at operating temperatures but provide harsher shifts when cold, which can risk damage, especially in manual transmissions.

Replacing the transmission fluid is more effortless, as you must drain and refill.

That said, do not get yourself in a sticky situation. Make sure you loosen and remove the fill bolt on the right of the transmission if you are facing toward the front of the car.

The oil from the transmission will fall directly under the drain plug, so there is no need to account for the flow path. To fill it, you will need a transfer pump, as gravity is not on your side for this one.

Knowing if it is filled is also a more straightforward process; when the fill hole drips, it’s loaded.

We hope this guide has provided you with the necessary tools, knowledge, and confidence to complete your first oil change. Or it might be a quick refresher and maybe an oil check along the way that hopefully enlightened you towards a better choice of oil.

Need some G35 test pipes for your Infiniti? Compare price, fitment and performance in our ultimate G35 test pipes guide.

g35 test pipes

There’s no doubt that the Infiniti G35 has been a popular choice in both the drifting and stance scenes throughout the years. With the cars now reaching a more affordable price point than ever, owners are looking to squeeze some additional power out of their VQ35 DE and HR V6 engines.

Test pipes are undoubtedly a great early modification to make to your G-series to see instant gains of around 4-10RWHP from the increased airflow provided.

Combine your new test pipes with aftermarket headers and an aftermarket cold air intake to get the most from the bolt-on modifications.

We highly recommend checking your local state laws to ensure that your car is still capable of passing local emissions testing.

Check out this compilation video to give yourself an idea of what route you would like to go down.

*Warning* Orgasmic V6 noises!

Let’s take a look at our G35 test pipes

ISR Performance G35 Test Pipes

isr G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: ISR Performance
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ???

Our comment: Our first test pipes in the guide are from budget-friendly brand ISR Performance. These test pipes are made with high-quality stainless steel and come with bolts, gaskets and 02 sensor adapter extensions.

They are designed for the VQ35DE, so if you have a late model G35 you should be looking at ISR’s later G35/Z34/G37 test pipes.

The price is extremely attractive, the quality and fitment sound solid from owners reviews, however, expect some drone when at wide open throttle.

For such an affordable product, the ISR test pipes are worth a look.

Manufacturer description:The ISR Performance test pipes are constructed using high quality stainless steel. These test pipes utilize stock flange locations so they can be used with stock components or aftermarket (Provided they aftermarket components use stock style flanges and mounting locations).

These test pipes will eliminate your catalytic converter, and are designed for off-road use only. Their straight through design will help add the maximum amount of horsepower and torque to your VQ, especially when paired with the ISR Y-pipe and exhaust!

These test pipes will ONLY work for VQ35DE motors, if you have a late model G35 with the VQ35HR you will need to purchase the Z34 style test pipes.

BERK Technology G35 Test Pipes

berk test pipes

  • Manufacturer: BERK Technology
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ????

Our comment: The BERK Technology test pipes are also aimed at a budget price point. They are made from 304 Stainless Steel and utilise a 60mm (2.36″) pipe diameter.

They do not make performance claims however they do note that their built-in CEL fix works 95% of the time. One neat feature is the inclusion of a 02 tapped hole with a bung on each pipe, this is designed to allow you to easily bolt on wideband 02 readers.

These are straight pipes and are not fitted with a resonator so expect a raspier exhaust note than before. For the money, the BERK test pipes make a good case for themselves.

Manufacturer description:Dual 60mm Test Pipes w/ Built in O2 CEL fix. Additional O2 Bung Included on both pipes for left bank & right bank wideband O2 fuel tuning.

Full 304SS. Built-in CEL fix is ~95% effective in most cases. Your results may vary. OFF ROAD USE ONLY. Fits VQ35DE Motor: 2003-2007 G35 Coupe, 2003-2006 G35 Sedan

Invidia G35 Test Pipes

invidia G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: Invidia
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ???
  • Purchase link: Invidia G35 Test Pipes

Our comment: The Invidia test pipes come in at the high end of our budget. They are made with 304 Stainless Steel and have a beautiful finish. They are built with a 60mm pipe diameter and offer sturdy support brackets to reduce exhaust movement.

Feature-wise they lack some of the cool additions of the competition, but they are clearly a solid product. Perhaps a little strong with the price point.

Manufacturer description:Installing the Invidia Test-Pipe is a great way to free up horsepower and increase the sound of your exhaust. By removing the stock catalytic converter you are allowing a greater volume of exhaust gases to pass through the exhaust system, thereby giving you better throttle response, increased power, and better gas mileage.

AAM Competition G35 Test Pipes

aam G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: AAM Competition G35 Test Pipes
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ?????

Our comment: The AAM Competition test pipes are a mid price point product. The pipes are built with 304 Stainless Steel to an extra wide specification of 2.5″ in diameter.

As with most of the test pipes in this guide, they come with brand new bolts and gaskets. AAM claim a dyno proven 8-10 RWHP gain on a stock 2004 G35. In addition, fitting these test pipes will save you 11 pounds in weight over the OEM catalysts.

For the features, performance and price, the AAM Competition test pipes are hard to beat.

Manufacturer description:AAM COMPETITION 2.5″ DE Test Pipes – Infiniti G35.

  • Highest Flow Available
  • Dyno testing has shown 8-10 RWHP gains on a stock 2004 G35!
  • Precision TIG welded T-304 Stainless Steel
  • T304 stainless steel flanges
  • Saves 11 pounds

BERK Technology G35 Test Pipes for 2007+

berk late model G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: BERK Technology
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ????

Our comment: The second BERK Technology product featured in this guide, and the only test pipes suited to the later model G35 – these test pipes come in right at the top end of our budget.

They offer all of the features of the BERK test pipes mentioned above (304SS, gaskets & fitting hardware, 02 bungs for wideband) but also offers some pretty serious gusseted and plated support brackets to keep your exhaust system more stable and reduce flex on your headers. Very good to see.

If you are a 07+ G35 owner then these pipes are the perfect fit for you.

Manufacturer description:Dual 60mm Test Pipes w/ Built-in O2 CEL fix. Additional O2 Bung Included on both pipes for left bank & right bank wideband O2 fuel tuning. Full 304SS. Built in CEL fix is ~95% effective in most cases. Your results may vary.

Motiv Concepts G35 Test Pipes

motiv G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: Motiv Concepts
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ???

Our comment: The Motiv Concepts test pipes are another high-end product, they are all handmade in the USA with a RathGibson tube of 2.5″ diameter.

These lovely looking pipes are finished with Motiv’s signature beautiful brushed finish and adorned with their name plaque. They look very cool indeed. The pipes are welded onto 3/8-inch thick stainless steel flanges and come with a lifetime warranty.

For the price, I would like to have found some dyno proven power claims, but you can expect similar performance to the AAM Competition units that also use 2.5″ diameter pipework.

If you want a high quality, no-thrills set of test pipes that come backed with a lifetime warranty, give Motiv a look.

Manufacturer description:Our highly anticipated 2007-up test pipes are now available! Features fully gusseted and plated support brackets, the strongest in the industry.

Includes the same leak free soft crush graphite collector gaskets found in our 07- up HFC’s and secondary O2 sensor bungs for wideband tuning or AF monitoring. Plugs included when not in use.

Mechanical CEL fix included, but on the 07-up HR motors it is less effective than the 03-06 motors. Full 304 stainless steel construction, made the right way in the USA.

Kinetix G35 Test Pipes

kinetix G35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: Kinetix
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ????

Our comment: The Kinetix test pipes come in at the middle of our price range. These pipes use a 2.25″ diameter pipework and feature thick 3/4″ TIG welded flanges.

The diameter of these test pipes makes them an ideal pairing for Borla, Injen or Nismo exhaust systems. They also claim to not throw a CEL. Sounding pretty good so far?

Couple that with a 4-8 RWHP power increase and you could say these test pipes sell themselves. Feedback on G35 owner’s clubs also seems favourable towards the brand. A great choice.

Manufacturer description:These pipes completely remove your factory catalytic converters and replaces them with a straight through design.

This provides the absolute most flow possible which has shown gains on NA G35’s between 4-8HP making it one of the best “bang for the buck” mods.

These pipes are an absolute must on FI cars which need all the flow possible. Constructed entirely of stainless steel and feature thick 3/8″ flanges.

They are completely TIG welded and also feature seamless mandrel bends. Tube diameter of 2.25″ matches up perfectly with aftermarket exhausts like Borla, Injen, and Nismo.

They retain the factory oxygen sensor mount and WILL NOT THROW A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT when run. These pipes will definately make your exhaust note more aggressive.

They have also tended to add a “raspy” exhaust note through the 3-4k range. This note has been loved by some, and hated by others, so it is not for the conservative.

They use all factory mounting points and there is no modification to the vehicle. These will work with either aftermarket headers, factory headers, aftermarket exhaust, or factory exhaust. **please note that these replace your factory converters with straight pipes which will not pass SMOG!

Manzo G35 Test Pipes

manzo stainless steel g35 test pipes

  • Manufacturer: Manzo
  • Fitment: Infinity G35 2003-2006
  • Value for money: ????
  • Purchase link: Manzo G35 Test Pipes

Our comment: Manzo is well known for providing bargains to the aftermarket tuning scene, and their test pipes are no exception.

As you may have guessed, this often comes at a compromise regarding quality, but the design simplicity works in their favor.

Although many enthusiasts have been happy with their Manzo test pipes, several have mentioned that the supplied nuts and bolts aren’t to the highest standards.

However, given that these are cheap enough to source, it still makes the kit excellent value for money.

If you’re looking for a bargain for your budget drifter, these are well worth considering. However, for those seeking only the finest products for your G, you may wish to prioritize the premium alternatives.

Manufacturer description:The most restrictive part of any exhaust system is the catalytic converter. The stock catalytic converter is meant to filter the flow of exhaust gases to reduce the amount of harmful gases into the atmosphere. Because of this, lots of potential performance is restrained.

Down Pipes eliminate the stock catalytic converter and reduce exhaust backpressure. By maximizing exhaust flow, this downpipe allows the turbo to spool up and build boost quicker. The result brings out the vehicle’s performance potential by giving it a free high flowing exhaust system.

Our winner

The test pipes we feel offer you the best value for money are the AAM Competition pipes.

All of the test pipes in this guide are quality items, which makes it a little tricky in choosing a winner. With that said, the AAM Competition test pipes seem to offer great quality, fitment, performance and compatibility with reducing CELs.

Picking up any set of test pipes in this guide will make a great addition to your G-series exhaust system, but if it was my money I would be looking at the AAM Competition test pipes.

There’s no question that the Infiniti G35 is continuously increasing in popularity in the tuning scene, with prices more tempting than ever before and owners are keen to get the best performance gains and sound out of their G-Series.

Why should I upgrade my G35 exhaust?

An exhaust is undoubtedly one of the first modifications that every owner should make to allow your VQ35DE (or HR) engine breathe as freely as possible whilst also offering an improved sound which we think it should’ve left the factory with.

Given their age and potential mileage, you may need to swap out your existing system if it develops a fault.

Others will opt for an aftermarket exhaust to improve the aesthetics of the G35’s booty and appreciate the performance gains that come with a free-flowing exhaust upgrade.

In stock form, OEM exhausts are naturally restrictive, thanks to the tight emissions legislation that they’re required to conform to.

Not only that, but if you intend to buy a brand new OEM exhaust from Infiniti/Nissan, you’ll likely leave the dealership with your eyes watering when they tell you the price.

Also, let’s not forget that the G35 was designed to be a luxury cruiser, and for the upper-class gentleman they’re appealing to, lairy aftermarket exhausts are probably the last thing on their mind.

infiniti base bc racing coilovers weds kranze cerberus ii chrome g35 exhaust

However, we’re going to take a quick guess that your interests lie elsewhere, which is why an exhaust upgrade is appealing.

When it comes to maximizing the potential of the G35’s 3.5 L V6 powerplant, an aftermarket exhaust will be essential.

Not only will you benefit from the improved looks, but it’ll also enable the V6 engine to roar to life.

Alongside these benefits, you’ll also likely receive better MPG, due to the free-flowing design of aftermarket exhausts, compared to the restrictive stock alternative.

infiniti x truhart air suspension esr sr07 machined g35 exhaust

That’s not all, either, because as you’ve probably guessed, all these free-flowing gases will help your VQ35 engine to breathe freely, which will provide both horsepower and torque gains.

With all these benefits, combined with a reasonable price tag, it’s easy to see why this simple, bolt-on upgrade is so popular among owners

If you’re looking for significant power with a turbo or supercharger kit further down the line, an upgraded exhaust is going to be vital.

If this is in your plans, we’d recommend at least a 3” exhaust to ensure that the additional gases can flow to their maximum potential.

Once you’ve found the perfect exhaust, make sure you also upgrade your cold air intake to maximize the breathing potential that these awesome engines have to offer.

Who is this exhaust guide for?

We have written this exhaust guide to help you decide on your G35’s new exhaust system by giving product information, pricing, photos and video clips for twelve of the most popular G35 exhaust systems currently available. We have also included links for where you can purchase each system.

If you’re looking to go all the way with a full exhaust system then make sure you also take a moment to check out our headers, Y-pipes and test pipes guides.

You may think that since they share the same engine, the 350Z and G35 exhausts would be identical, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. If you’re dead set on a 350Z exhaust or perhaps picked up a cheap used one, don’t panic!

There are plenty of extensions on the market. We recommend the 8” version which we’ve generally found to be the perfect fit.

  • Our comment: If the dual option above from AAM doesn’t suit the look you’ve got planned for your G35, then maybe their single-exit alternative will be the ideal solution.
  • AAM Competition claims that this is the highest flowing exhaust on the market, and we agree with them that it’ll be the ideal solution for those of you that will be running a forced induction setup on your G.

AAM has intentionally gone out of their way to avoid the boomy highway drone that often comes with the larger exhausts on the market.

  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel (Burnt Blue Tip)
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Manufacturer: Megan Racing
  • Value for money: ?????
  • Our comment: Megan Racing often surface in our guides, providing decent quality at an affordable price to the market.
  • If you’re not keen on the look of the exhaust in the photo, then don’t panic, as there’s also an option not to have the burnt tip.

Cheap, large-diameter exhausts are often the loudest, which is the case with this Megan Racing selection, which provides a loud, deep tone.

There is a removable silencer included, should you find it too loud, but remember that this will restrict performance. So, if you’re not in the market for a loud exhaust, this probably isn’t going to be the best choice for you.

However, if you don’t mind rolling loud and proud, and you’re looking to find exhaust with a cheap price tag, this could well present a great opportunity.

  • Manufacturer description: “One of Megan Racing’s strongest products, the Cat-Back System is made of SUS-304 Stainless Steel with a fully polished surface, CNC machined flanges and mandrel bends. Its aggressive styling, and deep, strong tone are just part of the MR Cat-Back characteristics. It also serves to improve horsepower, torque and overall performance with its straight-through design.”

Which G35 exhaust is our winner?

Japanese tuning house HKS has stood the test of time and continuously delivered an impeccable standard to the market. The quality, sound, and popularity of this exhaust speaks for itself, and combined with its mid-range price point we, therefore, find it our worthy winner.

There is a huge variety of exhausts to suit any needs you may have and we highly recommend ignoring the small horsepower gains between options and going with the exhaust which you like the look and sound of the most.

However, if you think you may go for forced induction further down the line then consider one of the larger diameter options.

hks g35 exhaust

The HKS Hi-Power exhaust has ticked the most boxes for us this time around. Offering an affordable price point combined with a great looking product from an extremely reputable manufacturer.

If money is not an issue, we’d be opting for the Meisterschaft exhaust. Absolutely incredible workmanship combined with the electronic noise control would make it the perfect choice for your daily driver.

Open it up at the track and close it up when parking up or passing the cops, (but we didn’t tell you that!)

If you’re in the market for power gains, sound and throttle response improvement and overall improvement to the look of the engine bay, you’ve come to the right place!

We cover both the earlier DE and the later HR engines in this guide, so this guide is here to help you find the perfect solution for your needs.

APEXi Power Intake for Infiniti G35

apexi G35 cold air intake

Our comment: The APEXi power intake kit lands at the budget end of of our G35 cold air filters. This kit is designed to offer you a simple bolt on solution to tidy up your engine bay, increase power, improve throttle response and increase induction noise.

If you need a simple and reliable intake kit for your G-series then the APEXi is worth a look, where I would be a little concerned is the lack of quoted power figures from the manufacturer and installation on standard intake pipework.

This is fine for the standard filter in OEM airbox as the box shields the engine heat, while this filter is exposed so it may suffer from heat soak. But with that said, for the price you really can’t complain!

Manufacturer description:The Power Intake is the premier air filter designed to create pure horsepower. The intake funnels used in racing machines take advantage of a characteristic where air travels along the side of the side of surfaces.

However, the center portion of the funnel is virtually unused. It is this concept that gave birth to the Dual Funnel design. A primary funnel on the top portion of the air cleaner was inserted to channel the air flow directly into the lower funnels at the base of the cleaner.

This design was a huge success on the former Super Intake model. The Power Intake took this design and improved the flow characteristics. New funnel design, element material and air flow channeling characteristics make the Power Intake one of the most efficient air cleaners on the market today.

By constructing the upper and lower funnel from a highly durable injected resin, engineers were able to construct the ideal shaped funnel previously not possible with the stainless steel material.

JWT Pop-Charger Air Filter for Infiniti G35

jwt g35 cold air intake

Our comment: The JWT pop charger is a competitively priced intake kit that has a lot to offer. A dyno proven 6.5bhp increase in power, hood sealed heat shield and a price point under $180 makes a very good case for itself.

If I had to find a negative I would say the intake isn’t the most attractive bit of engine bay bling, but looks are subjective. Solid contender.

Manufacturer description:The JWT Pop-Charger air filter with heat shield produces a real 6.5+ bhp increase at the wheels! Hood sealed heat shield insures outside air temperatures.

This system consistently out performs extended piping systems on the G35 without the risk of ingesting water due to remote filter positioning.

NissanPerformanceMag: Not wanting to mess around we put the car on the dyno immediately and recorded the biggest gains we’ve seen on any G35 intake yet: 6.5 hp at the wheels! The driving difference was noticeable, springing a welcomed quickness to redline. To say we were amazed is an understatement.

STILLEN Hi-Flow Air Intake for Infiniti G35

stillen g35 cold air intake

Our comment: The STILLEN Hi-Flow air intake is an solid option for your G35. The kit includes a high performance K&N air filter and a polyurethane heat shield.

The heat shield helps keep hot air away from the air filter and the combination produces 5bhp at the wheels, over the stock intake.

I’m giving this kit three stars as although it is a solid kit, personally I would be looking at the JWT that offers more performance for considerably less cash.

Manufacturer description:Cold air is in, and STILLEN can supply your G35 with plenty of it. Long known as the leaders in Nissan/Infiniti performance tuning, STILLEN has introduced a Cold Air Intake System for the popular G35.

The intake adds an honest 5 more Hp and 4 more lb/ft of Torque to the Z and while giving you a crisper throttle response. Comprised of a high-quality polyurethane intake port, washable and reusable cotton filter element, and STILLENs signature Aluminum Venturi Ring, the Intake draws air from outside the engine bay.

The venturi ring acts as a velocity stack, speeding up and directing the airflow into the intake chambers, making more useable and noticeable power. The Intake System also lends a more aggressive tone to the Z when pressed, but remains unobtrusive at idle. The STILLEN Cold Air Intake System is the perfect way to add an edge to your G35.

Takeda Air Intake for Infiniti G35

takeda g35 cold air intake

Our comment: Okay, now it’s time to get serious. Takeda are claiming that this high quality cold air intake is going to bolt on an extra 19bhp and 16flt/lbs of torque to your G35. That is a serious boost for under $300.

This is a well designed but simple kit that includes an aluminium short ram pipe with a Takeda Pro Dry S oil-less filter.

For the cost and the performance increase, this intake is rewarded with five stars. What a bargain.

Manufacturer description:Takeda Retain is the Takeda Short Ram lineup. These intakes create simple, bolt-on horsepower that requires simple, quick installation and no bumper removal. Some of the short ram intakes include a wrinkle black heat shield.

Takeda Air Intake Systems use a revolutionary new Pro Dry S Filter Media that works without filter oil. This media is easier and faster to clean than traditional foam, and requires no costly and messy solvents or oils.

Takeda filters can be cleaned in a matter of minutes and are ready to use after only a couple of hours of drying time. Unlike pre-oiled or disposable filters, Takeda Filters are Lifetime Filters that will last as long as you own your vehicle.

STILLEN Gen 2 Long Tube Dual Intake for Infiniti G35

stillen g35 gen2 long tube cold air intake

Our comment: STILLEN’s Gen 2 long tube dual intake is a comprehensive kit that offers one air filter per bank of cylinders, long relocation pipework and urethane heat shields.

By relocating the air intakes further away from the stock position helps to feed the engine more cold air. If you live in a typically rainy country like the UK then it also reduces chances of hydro-lockling from flood waters.

This kit looks fantastic in the engine bay, the aluminium pipes really adding some visual bling. Although Stillen is not making bhp claims on this kit, owners who have installed it typically quote around 15bhp increases.

Manufacturer description:For those drivers out there with a Dual Throttle Body G35 who want improved performance with a show quality shine, we’ve introduced our Gen 2 Long Tube Intakes that replaces the restrictive factory air boxes with two dual cone genuine K&N reusable high flow conical air filters.

These filters are designed with an integral velocity stack and attach to our newly designed polished aluminum long tubes. Replacing the factory intake tubes with the STILLEN design adds additional horsepower, and a great look for the engine bay.The filters sit inside custom-fitted urethane intake boxes, which ensure no hot engine compartment air gets sucked into the intake tract.

This creates a cold air path, and unlike other manufacturers who only partially shield the filter from hot under hood air, STILLEN has fully enclosed the filters and draws on cold air from behind the grille, for optimum performance. As with all of our urethane intake boxes, these can be left natural black or painted to match the color scheme of the car.

Our Intake Features: Polished Aluminum Mandrel Bent Pipes, Completely Replace Factory Tubes, CNC machined MAF sensor for precision fit and finish, Silicone Connectors, True Cold Air design via Urethane Boxes, Increased throttle response and horsepower, Genuine 1 million mile warrantied, K&N Filters – Dual Cone w/Integrated Velocity Stack, No Check Engine Light (CEL) Problems, No Chance of Hydro locking, Ease of access to filter elements, Limited lifetime warranty, Easy to Follow Instructions, CARB approved

The STILLEN Generation 2 Long Tube Dual Hi-Flow Intake is mild under cruising situations, and really comes to life creating an impressive intake note under acceleration.

Stillen Gen 3 Ultra Long Tube Dual Intake for Infiniti G35

stillen g35 gen3 ultra long cold air intake

Our comment: The second of our cold air intakes aimed at the late model G35 is the generation three STILLEN long tube dual intake. Like the generation two kit this is a long pipe relocation style upgrade featuring one filter per cylinder bank.

Unlike the previous generation, this third gen model offers a dyno proven additional 20bhp at the wheels. For just under $500 that is a pretty good performance deal.

Couple that with the great looking aluminium pipework and the STILLEN generation three makes a compelling case for itself.

Manufacturer description:STILLEN Introduces the All New Generation 3 Ultra Long Tube Intake for the dual throttle body VQ engines. STILLEN was the first national tuner to introduce a high flow intake for the Infiniti G35.

Our first short tube intake provided a small gain in power with a great sound. Economical and easily installed, this Generation 1 Short Tube Intake became instantly popular. Some months later STILLEN introduced our Generation 2 Long Tube Intake, featuring polished tubes, even better sound and a power gain over the Generation 1.

Our continuing dedication to getting the maximum performance from each vehicle has lead to the introduction of our new Generation 3 Ultra Long Tube Intake. This intake has a radically new design that provides dramatically better power than any intake on the market for the VQ37 equipped vehicle’s.

Our R&D team went engineered and dyno tested more than 50 variations before being satisfied that this system is the best that can be made for the VQ37 engines. The new Gen 3 Ultra Long Tube Intake places two large K&N filters (oiled filter option) or two AEM dry filters (dry filter option) in front of the radiator.

Strategic placement of the filters allow for optimum cold air flow and easy filter removal for cleaning. It features additional polished tubes that pass through the front core support, larger air filters than the Generation 2 unit. On some applications such as the G37 a urethane splash guard is included in the kit to help protect the filter.

This is only necessary on vehicles with larger grill openings from the factory. All kits feature a system of varied diameter tubing and steps to maximize air velocity. The power result: A dyno-proven 20 horsepower gain at the wheelson the Dual Throttle Body 350Z, 18.5 horsepower gain at the wheels on the G37 Coupe and 17.5 horsepower on the 370Z.

This translates to an estimated 20-22 horsepower gain at the flywheel! For G37/G35 Sedan owners, gains are 14 horsepower at the wheels. No other intake for the VQ can match these power gains!

Recommended installation requires removal of the front fascia clip (not absolutely necessary for some vehicles, but significantly aids in ease of installation) and slightly enlarging the holes through the front core support. No other part relocation or parts removal is required.

Injen Cold Air Intake System for Infiniti G35

injen g35 cold air intake

Our comment: The Injen kit uses a single intake coupled with a three piece pipe to relocate the filter as far away from the engine as possible. This cold air intake is the only filter in our list that offers OEM style black pipwork, which is pretty cool.

Injen claim up to 20bhp power gains from this intake, which is very impressive, especially considering the sub $300 price point.

This kit looks like a great option for your G35. The only negative I can see is that part of the pipework is silicone hosing, which doesn’t look quite as nice as full metal. A well deserved four stars for Injen.

Manufacturer description:For the enthusiasts who has performance and style in mind, the all new long and sleek SP1986 will deliver just that. Delivering what the RD1985 did and a whole lot more, it’s engineered to deliver gains of up to 8-17 hp. This SP1986 will decimate them all!

Injen’s innovative tri-step process and Dyno Tuned sensor adapter eliminates the use of the stock MAF adaptor, making this system really stand out among the competition.

Top Speed Titanium Cold Air Intake for Infiniti G35

top speed titanium g35 cold air intake

Our comment: If you’re looking for a genuinely unique CAI offering, then the chances are that Top Speed has you covered.

Not only do they provide a traditional polished look with a reasonable price tag, but it’s the offerings that are a little different from the norm that has us excited.

Those looking to pop their hood and show off their bay will love the variety of options available here.

Not only is there an immaculate-looking carbon fiber option available, but there’s also a treat for the eyes with the titanium model.

If the stunning titanium welds aren’t enough to tempt you, then perhaps their burnt blue titanium finish will provide the perfect touch you’ve been looking for.

With a fantastic selection available to suit everyone’s needs, the Top Speed intakes are a worthy contender.

Manufacturer description:Very Light Weight. Both Intake Pipes with 2.3 Lbs Total Weight

The Stock Plastic Pipe are Restrictive with built in Resonator and Flex sections. This New Titanium Intake Pipe will have More Smooth Flow without Resonator

Whether you’re intending to throw your G35 sideways, hoping to beat your best lap times at the track, settle for a nicer ride-height or go full-retard with the hellaflush stance look, we’ve got you covered!

The G35 handles well out of the factory, but it was also made with the daily commute in mind. Some of the coilovers we mention still enable you to maintain an enjoyable daily ride quality, while others will give you all of the adjustments you could possibly need for the ultimate track setup.

Not only will you be upgrading your suspension, you’ll also be updating the tired shocks and springs that most likely left your car from the factory while adding full adjustability to tweak the settings to perfection.

2005 g35 infiniti base tein coilovers aodhan ds02 custom g35 coilover guide

If you’ve not yet copped yourself a G35, you may also want to consider some of the similar alternatives on the market, such as the Nissan 350z and Infiniti G37.

However, if you’ve already got your hands on a G35, this is your opportunity to unleash G-series’ handling potential with our ultimate G35 coilover guide!

Why should you replace your stock suspension with coilovers?

For those who are happy with the stock ride height and handling of your G35, you might not feel the need to go for an aftermarket suspension setup.

Although this may well be okay for some, it doesn’t allow for suspension adjustment, which is vital whether you’re planning on drifting, carving up the canyons, scraping to the local stance meet, or just wanting to push the limits of the G35.

With a coilover kit, you’re able to set the ride height and dampening to perfectly suit your needs, alongside many other potential additional features, such as camber adjustment, depending on the specific coilover kit(s) you have in mind.

2004 g35 infiniti tein coilovers aodhan ds02 machined g35 coilover guide

Those of you that are planning to unleash the true potential of what the VQ35 has to offer with a turbo or supercharger kit, coilovers are going to be crucial when it comes to putting the power down to the ground.

Even if you’re not planning to go down the forced induction route, but you’re considering power upgrades such as intake plenum spacers, headers, test pipes, or Y-Pipes. In that case, we still believe that coilovers will present the perfect upgrade to maximize the potential on offer.

What is this guide for?

This guide was written to help you find your perfect set of G35 coilovers. We will be focusing on suspension specifications, features, construction materials, spring rates and manufacturer descriptions.

For each set of coilovers we also add our own comments. In addition we have given each suspension system a Drifted rating (1-5) based upon features and price. We are considering budget, mid-range and high end coilovers in this comparison.

Let’s take a look at our G35 coilovers

  • Spring rate front: 10kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 8kg/mm
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Value for money: ????
  • Purchase link: Buy your Tanabe Sustec Pro’s here!

Our comment: The Tanabe Sustec Pro FIVE is a mid-range coilover. The design features twin tube coilovers coupled with Tanabe’s Slide Valve Technology. This technology comes directly from their Pro SEVEN coilover kit but it is at a more affordable price point.

Something that makes this kit stand out is the compatibility with Tanabe’s TEAS electronic suspension controller. This gizmo (once mounted in the car) allows for remote suspension setup on the fly. It sounds like a slice of Formula One in your G35! Very cool.

Manufacturer description:Sustec Pro FIVE is an all new adjustable coilover that features a wide array of new circuit-developed technology that is similar to Tanabe’s Sustec Pro SEVEN. However, Sustec Pro FIVE delivers broad performance at a fraction of the cost.”

“Featuring the same slide-valve technology as the SEVEN, the Sustec Pro FIVE also gives a great range of adjustability and function for street and track use.”

  • Spring rate front: 12kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 6kg/mm
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Value for money: ???
  • Purchase link: Buy your Stance XR1’s here

Our comment: The Stance XR coilovers are a solid choice. 12 way damping adjustment, highly regarded SWIFT springs as standard and robust build materials makes the Stance XR1’s a great option for any G35. They lose out slightly on points as they don’t have a killer feature like the Tanabe Sustec’s TEAS system nor as they as cheap as the APEXi ExVs.

Manufacturer description:Stance XR Coilover Damper Kit for the Infiniti G35 is a high quality monotube suspension kit. The XR offers features 60mm OD casing and an inverted monotube design, which reduces rod pressure for consistent performance. Swift Springs are made from H5S.TW which is stronger than our regular silicone chrome material.”

“The monotube suspension design is the key difference that makes this coilover stand out. The oil and gas are completely separated from each other which results in precise damping characteristics and performance. Heat is also dissipated much quicker than conventional twin tube suspension.”

“With customizable spring rates, urethane upper mounts, 12-way adjustable damping, and an adjustable lower bracket, this coilover is everything you need for any kind of driving.”

Features include:
– 12 Way Damping Adjustment
– Inverted Monotube Design

Our comment: H&R is a German brand that has been manufacturing high quality suspension components since the 1970’s. These monotube constructured and street focused coilovers are another solid entry level coilover set for your G35. While a little sparse in the features department, H&R have a built great reputation for the quality of their products.

  • Spring rate rear: 12.5kg/mm
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Value for money: ????
  • Purchase link: Buy your APEXi Evolutions here!

Our comment: Serious about the track? These coilovers could be just what you are looking for. Stepping into the higher end of the suspension market, the APEXi N1 Evolution coilovers offer thick monotube dampers, 20 way adjustment and full dual height adjustment means that you (or your engineer) can tweak the suspension settings to your hearts content.

If you are serious about your track work this level of suspension fine tuning is a very powerful tool for reducing your lap times and building confidence in your car.

Manufacturer description: “APEXi proudly introduces the S1 Damper system for the Infiniti G35 Chassis as one of the line of coilover kits from Apexi featuring dual height and 20 way dampening adjustments.”

“Ride quality and handling performance are not mutually exclusive. Almost all coilover suspension systems are designed for track use, but are not well matched for street use. In fact, most are sprung and dampened improperly for street use, which not only gives a harsh and unpleasurable ride, but also hurts grip performance when the suspension cannot conform to the terrain.”

“To address this gap, Apex proudly introduces the S1 Damper line, with a specifically selected recipe of spring rates, oil and valving for hi-performance street cars that doubl as weekend track machines. 100% made in Japan, with precision Japanese components.”

KW Suspensions Variant 3 G35 Coilover Kit

kw suspensions variant 3 v3 infiniti g35 coilovers

Our comment: This mid-range offering from German suspension experts KW is arguably the highest-regarded coilover setup for those of you with a mid-range budget.

It’s not the cheapest kit out there; however, if you don’t mind spending a little extra cash over a budget setup, then the V3 is going to provide the ultimate solution to your handling needs.

They say that quality comes at a price, and the KW V3 is the perfect example of this.

Whether you’re planning a full-blown drift or track setup, or a weekend canyon carver, the KW V3 kit will be the perfect all-rounder for anyone that’s looking to push their suspension to the limit.

A bonus is the stainless steel construction of these coilovers, which means that corrosion won’t become an issue. If you somehow did suffer from any problems, KW provides one of the best warranties on the market.

Manufacturer description: “The separate and independent compression and rebound damping options allow a truly individual driving set-up.”

“These unique systems with the 3 individually adjustable components, allows for adjustment of the compression of the damper in the low-speed range, while the highspeed set-up, so decisive for driving comfort, has been preset by the engineers.”

Features include:
– Independently adjustable damping technology -rebound and compression damping
– Individual height adjustment
– High-quality components for long life
– Infinitely adjustable rebound damping
– 14- level adjustable compression damping

KSport Kontrol Pro G35 Coilover Kit

ksport k sport kontrol pro damper system infiniti g35 coilovers

Our comment: KSport has earned itself a decent reputation in the budget sector, and many owners are happy with their choice with the Kontrol Pro kit.

These are higher quality than most budget alternatives, but that comes with the slightly higher price-point, which pushes them into the region of some of the superior offerings.

Although these aren’t stainless steel like the KW V3’s, they’re zinc plated, which may make them an attractive budget solution for those of you that live in areas where corrosion may potentially present an issue.

All in all, a decent kit to consider, but we would be investing our money in something a little more impressive.

Manufacturer description: “Ksport Kontrol Pro Fully Adjustable Coilover Kits provide the ultimate in suspension technology for your street or track car.”

“36 levels of damping adjustment allow you to fine tune the ride to your handling and comfort needs. The damping adjusts compression and rebound simultaneously for ease of adjustment. Pillow ball top mounts in the front and rear on some applications allow you to maintain vehicle manufacturer suspension geometry design.”

Features include:
– Pillowball Top Mounts
– Height Adjustment
– Camber Adjustment
– Aerospace Quality Aluminum Components
– 36 Way Adjustable Damping

BC Racing BR G35 Coilover Kit

bc racing br series infiniti g35 coilovers

Our comment: For those of you that are looking for the best setup for your G35 but aren’t looking to go into the four-figure price bracket, the BC Racing BR kit is about as good as you’ll get for the money.

Featuring fantastic quality and ride comfort, and a wide range of adjustability for when you want to hit up the track, the BR kit ticks all of the right boxes, and we think that you’ll struggle to get any better for the price.

This kit has been stacked up against some of the more expensive competitors on the market and put them to shame, so it’s easy to see why so many tuning enthusiasts are opting for the BR’s as their weapon of choice.

Manufacturer description: “Featuring easily accessible adjustment knobs and separately adjustable ride height, the BR series makes adjusting and maintaining your performance coilover system easier than ever.”

“Ride height is independently user adjustable so you can dial in the exact look to reflect your driving style and performance needs. BC’s patented concave lower locking ring keeps all adjustments locked in and ready for precise predicable feed back in any scenario. BR series coilovers provide a strong, complete and attractive coilover system at a great price.”

Features include:
– Mono-tube shock design
– 30 levels of damping force adjustment
– Adjustable Compression and Rebound
– Pillowball mounts and adjustable camber plates
– Separate, full-length height adjustment

Our winner

Our winner is the KW Suspensions Variant 3 G35 Coilover Kit

Based upon specifications, features, quality of build materials and the low price point our winner is the KW Suspensions Variant 3 G35 Coilover Kit.

Although they’re not the cheapest out there, they’re far from the most expensive, yet they’re superior even to the costlier alternatives on the market.

We believe that the KW V3 kit provides the perfect bang-for-your-buck for anyone looking for the very best suspension setup for daily, fast road, or even track use.

KW are experts in this game, and the V3 kit is one of their premium offerings that fall into the mid-range price bracket.

Add the stainless steel construction and progressive spring rates into the mix, and it’s easy to see why we believe that the KW V3 kit is the worthy winner in this guide.

Should I get Y-Pipes for my G35?

If you’re hoping to achieve the most free-flowing exhaust possible for your Infiniti G35’s VQ35 engine then Y-Pipes are undoubtedly another must-have in the list of bolt-on modifications to get the most out of your V6 powerplant.

What gains will I achieve from Y-Pipes?

Y-Pipes connect between the exhaust headers (or manifolds) to the exhaust. From the factory, Nissan intentionally made these restrictive to meet various emissions and sound requirements.

If you have performance in mind, an aftermarket upgrade is going to offer you a a weight-saving performance increase whilst also providing a more aggressive sound. Sounds ideal, right?

Want to see how easy it is to install a set of Y-Pipes on your G35? Hit play on the video above to watch KalKam install a set of Y-Pipes onto his G35. In case you weren’t already aware, the Z33/350z Y-Pipes also fit the G35.

Let’s take a look at our G35 Y-Pipes

Manzo G35 Y-Pipes

manzo g35 y-pipes

Our comment: The Manzo Y-Pipes are our cheapest option for your G-series. These Y-Pipes are built with stainless steel and feature a 2.5″ inlet and 3″ outlet. They also offer flexible sections to help prevent stress on the exhaust headers.

For the price you might need to make minor fitting modifications, but these should give you great bang for the buck.

Manufacturer description:

  • Stainless Steel Y Pipe w/ Flex Pipe
  • Inlet: 2.5″
  • Outlet: 3″
  • O2 Sensor Ports: 0
  • Engine: 3.5L V6 VQ35DE

Megan Racing G35 Y-Pipes

megan racing g35 y-pipes

Our comment: The Megan Racing Y-Pipe setup are a mid range product, priced just under $200. These pipes are well made in T-304 stainless steel, they offer a 2.5″ inlet and 3″ outlet.

Each side of the pipes offer flexible sections to help reduce stress on the exhaust headers. While Megan Racing haven’t released dyno results, owners have posted claims of 5 RWHP increases on the dyno.

Couple that with weight savings from the stainless steel build materials and the Megan Racing offering is a solid contender.

Manufacturer description:

  • 2.5″ inlet / 3.0″ outlet
  • NOTE: Off road used only!
  • 100% T-304 Stainless Steel with computerized mandrel-bends
  • CNC-machined flanges for strong solid support
  • TIG-welded for strength and durability
  • 3-stage polish for a mirror-like finish
  • Straight-through design and bolt-on installation

The Infinity G35 and Nissan 350Z are high-end performance machines, boasting the VQ35DE V6 Engine that easily pulls these cars through the highest demands. Because they are at the fore-front of automotive technology, many aspects of the cars performance have grown increasingly complicated. Modifying simple things such as the vehicle’s exhaust system, becomes a daunting task that can become pricey. Due to the complexity of the bends, flanges and welds in the OEM Y-Pipe, Megan Racing has decided to manufacture a direct bolt-on Y-Pipe for the 350Z and G35.

The Y-Pipe features two High-Flow flex pipes to reduce the interior noise resonance without sacrificing performance while the Polished T-304 Stainless Steel construction offers a show-car look and long lasting durability.

The inlets are 2.5″ that follow through with individual pipes until they converge at the Cat-Back system with a 3″ Flat-Flange to provide a secure and tight seal every time.

Specifications & Features:

APPLICATION:

PRODUCT UPDATE:

– Our newest revision, pictured, features an extended collector further down the exhaust path to help with exhaust scavenging properties to maximize flow. This more recent revision is designed off of the “HR” engine, while the previous version was designed off of the “DE” engine– the newer revised version will still fit all model years 2003-2007 Nissan 350Z and G35. The photo of the Y-pipe on the vehicle is the previous version. On some years, modification or removal of a factory plastic guard underneath the vehicle may be necessary– a small price to pay for the performance benefits added.

NOTE: All Megan Racing Exhaust and Suspension products are deemed for “off-road use only”– please check local laws regarding the modification of the exhaust systems by checking the vehicle code for your state. Many states are more stringent on exhaust modification laws and to pass SMOG. Please check your local laws.

AAM Competition G35 Y-Pipes

aam competition g35 y-pipes

Our comment: The AAM Competition is another high quality product with a mid-range price point. These Y-Pipes shave four pounds off the weight of the OEM piece while increasing inlet and outlet dimensions for improved exhaust flow.

Built with T-304 stainless steel with flexible sections to help reduce exhaust header stress, the AAM Competition system boasts an impressive 8 RWHP power hike over the stock system.

For the power gains and weight savings the AAM Competition Y-Pipes make an excellent option for your G35.

Manufacturer description:

  • Factory Y-Pipe: approx 16 lbs
  • Inlet: 2.5″
  • AAM Comp Y-Pipe: approx 12 lbs
  • Weight savings: 4 lbs
  • Recommended install time: 1 hour

Constructed of 16-gauge T-304 Stainless Steel to ensure the highest reliability, quality, and performance, AAM is proud to announce the release of its Y-Pipe for the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35.

Using smooth 2.5″ mandrel bent tubing and stainless steel flex joints which flow into one large 3″ tube, the AAM Comp Y-Pipe improves upon the factory Y-Pipe’s restrictive design by allowing a substantial increase in the mass of exhaust flow, and reduces the backpressure and thermal stress, which helps to unleash the engine’s potential for increased power and torque.

Dyno tested on a near stock 2004 Nissan 350Z, the AAM Comp Y-Pipe gained 8 RWHP in comparison to the factory Y-Pipe! Don’t be fooled by competitors designs which commonly use 18 or 20-gauge tubing that is prone to cracking, and non-stainless steel (if any) flex sections. The AAM Comp Y-Pipe is a direct bolt-on upgrade that requires no modification of any factory components.

ISR Performance G35 Y-Pipes

isr performance g35 y-pipes

Our comment: The ISR Performance offering is another sub $200 set of Y-Pipes made from stainless steel with a 2.5″ inlet and 3″ outlet.

ISR published an interesting article comparing 350z/G35 Y-Pipes that makes a convincing case for their focus on quality.

This product has been designed with a “formed velocity merge” for enhanced exhaust flow. Like most of the other Y-Pipes in this guide you can expect a minor weight saving and bump in power over stock.

Manufacturer description:The ISR Performance 350z/G35 Y-pipe utilizes 2.5″ stainless steel piping along with bellowed flex sections running from the 2 bolt catalytic converter flanges back to the high performance velocity merge.

The Y pipe then steps to 3″ stainless piping coming out of the velocity merge to the rear 3″ exhaust flange. The Y pipe also features an integrated dimpled gusset plate tying the two individual runners together for increased strength and rigidity.

The ISR Performance Y pipe was designed to provide the best possible exhaust tone, ground clearance, and performance, all at an affordable price!

TOMEI Expreme G35 Y-Pipes

tomei g35 y-pipes

Our comment: Like most of the Expreme Ti range, the TOMEI Y-Pipes are a high-end, well made product. These pipes are built in Titanium with slip on connections.

These exotic materials mean a serious weight saving of 12 pounds (5.44kg) over stock. Unfortunately TOMEI have not released dyno figures with the Y-Pipes alone but you can expect a < 10 horsepower gain.

A great product and a perfect compliment to a full Titanium exhaust system.

Manufacturer description:This all new Mid Y Pipe from Tomei is a great addition to any race inspired G35. It creates extremely high exhaust flow and nets you extra horsepower in the process.

While gaining horsepower is important the extra 12 pounds in weight savings on this full titanium peice is also a plus.

What will I gain from an intake plenum spacer?

Shortly after the G35 was released to the market, aftermarket manufacturers realized that by increasing the volume of air into the intake plenum with a simple spacer, it would be able to generate increased horsepower and torque.

In one of the simplest bolt-on modifications available, you can achieve up to an insane 14bhp with this quick, cheap and convenient tried-and-proven method.

On top of cheap and easy power gains, installing a plenum spacer also provides you with improved MPG.

There simply isn’t a better value for money performance upgrade for the VQ35 and for that reason we believe this is a must-have modification for your G-series.

This is a great first mod for your G35.

Skunk2 G35 Intake Plenum Spacer

Skunk2 g35 Intake Plenum Spacer

Our comment: The Skunk2 intake plenum spacer is now on version 2 and this latest revision offers you impressive value for money.

With a dyno proven 10 BHP gain, claims of improved throttle response and enhanced gas mileage the Skunk2 offering makes a very good case for itself.

Manufacturer description:Skunk2’s revised Nissan/Infiniti VQ35 Composite Intake Plenum Spacer V2.0 is dyno proven and road tested to outperform all other intake manifold plenum spacers.

Skunk2’s Intake Plenum Spacer V2.0 features a number of improvements, including a thicker design that increases plenum volume, lowers intake temperatures, and allows the engine’s front cylinders to breathe more efficiently.

All of this results in gains as high as 10 hp, increased throttle response, and a fuel efficiency increase of more than 2mpg. Unlike competitors’ spacers, Skunk2’s Intake Plenum Spacer V2.0 is constructed from an aerospace thermo-polymer composite that offers superior thermal insulation characteristics when compared to aluminum spacers or other heat-insulating gasket materials.

A unique, industry-first, each plenum spacer’s perimeter is injected sealed for tight fitment, eliminating the OEM gasket. Skunk2’s plenum spacer is also easy to install and is packaged with all necessary hardware, including the necessary components to bypass the throttle body’s water lines.

BLOX Racing G35 Intake Plenmum Spacer

Our comment: The BLOX Racing intake plenum spacer is offered at the lowest price point in this guide. BLOX Racing claim improved power, torque and throttle response however they do not offer specific dyno numbers to back this up.

After reading reviews online the quality appears to be hit and miss, some owners have raved about the BLOX Racing spacer while offers have complained of poor fitment especially with bolt hole placements on the spacer.

If you are after a cheap bolt on performance mod and don’t mind undertaking some adjustment work then this spacer could be the one for you.

Manufacturer description:The BLOX Racing intake manifold spacer for the Nissan/Infiniti VQ35 is specifically designed to help increase the manifold’s capacity and lower the intake air temperature.

As a result of the improved efficiency, power and throttle response is also increased. The manifold spacer is made out of thermal polymer, which provides dramatic heat insulating properties, and easily installs between the factory’s intake manifold.

The BLOX Racing plenum spacer is available in three different thicknesses, in order to provide the best fitment and power potental.

Plenum Thicknesses: 1/2″, 5/16″ and 5/8″ available.

Motordyne G35 Intake Plenmum Spacer

motordyne g35 intake plenum spacer

Our comment: The Motordyne product is the most expensive and best performing intake plenum spacer in our line up. Motordyne justify the price tag with an impressive power increase claim of 12-14 BHP.

They also stress that this spacer will clear the standard G35 bonnet/hood.

Motordyne’s intake plenum spacer is a popular product within the Nissan/Infiniti community and it only misses out on five stars due to it’s price tag.

Manufacturer description:The Motordyne Copper Iso Thermal plenum spacer adds 12HP-14HP and reduces the effect of power robbing heat soak by thermally isolating both the upper and lower plenum. The 5/16″ thickness provides the best overall performance and is fully compatible with your engine cover and strut bar.

All Motordyne Iso Thermal systems keep your upper and lower plenum cooled without the risk of throttle body freezing when driving in cold weather.

Use the Copper if it snows in your area.

Our winner

Our winner is the Skunk2 G35 Intake Plenum Spacer

So which spacer would we buy if it was our cash? We would choose the Skunk2 V2 intake plenmum spacer as our winner due to the hefty dyno-backed performance increase, affordable price point and the quality Skunk2 brand that underpins this product.

When squeezing the extra ponies out of your G35‘s VQ35DE (or HR) engine, headers should be right at the top of your list of bolt-on modifications.

g35 exhaust gas flow Whether you’re planning to go down the supercharged, turbocharged or even NA route, you’ll undoubtedly witness substantial gains when installing aftermarket headers.

We have no question that Nissan did a great job with this engine from the factory, but the increased airflow from these manifolds with tuning in mind makes a worthwhile difference.

In this guide, we’ll cover the budget end of the market right the way through to the high-end, we hope to be able to find an ideal product for all G35 owners.

Our performance figures have been provided by the manufacturers and have rather large variations, so we recommend that you take this into consideration and do your own research if power figures are important in your build.

Borla G35 Exhaust Headers

borla g35 header

Our comment: Borla is a household name for American tuners, they have a solid reputation for putting out quality products and are now covering some popular JDM platforms.

This pair of exhaust headers (manifolds) is constructed from high quality austenitic stainless steel (superior to T-409 or aluminized steel), the collectors have outer diameters of 2″ and the primary tubes measure 1.5″.

Borla claim a healthy 10bhp gain on top of the standard G35 output. This is a solid choice for your G-series.

Manufacturer description:This quality header is made of all stainless steel. We wanted to see what power it would make so we dyno’ed before and after this header on a new VQ35 with only a Gen1 Borla exhaust and intake on it.

With an equal comparison of before and after the headers gained 10 horsepower and 3 ft/lbs of torque across the board. These are great gains. Choose this header because its proven and from a name you can trust.

OBX Long Tube G35 Exhaust Headers

obx g35 headers

Our comment: OBX Racing Sports land firmly at the budget end of our comparison, OBX have a hit and miss reputation for product quality, which you really should expect from a budget brand.

If you want cheap performance, you should consider extra fitting time and potentially needing to modify the product. With that said, I personally ran OBX exhaust headers on my Honda NSX and after tricky fitting found they produced excellent gains.

That wasn’t a G35, but it’s worth keeping in mind. The OBX units have a 1.7″ primary tube diameter with a 2″ outlet. I haven’t found any performance claims from OBX but rumours that they are PPE replica design so I would expect similar gains.

With all the other reputable options I wouldn’t personally go for the OBX, but if you are strapped for cash and don’t mind getting your hands dirty they might work for you.

Manufacturer description:OBX Racing Sports™ offer extensive range of high quality aftermarket automotive products for imports and domestic vehicles. OBX Racing Sports™ sets and maintain the industry’s high expectations by using applicable highest grade materials and latest machinery along with advanced cutting edge manufacturing technologies.

Replace inefficient factory cast log manifold with OBX Racing Sports™ performance header and increase smoother and better exhaust flow at higher RPM to generate more power and maximize performance out of your engine.

Primary Tube: 1.7″ OD Outlet: 2.0″ ID – 2.2″ OD Flange Thickness: 0.40″ Runner Wall Thickness: 16 Gauge (1.5mm).

  • High quality T-304 stainless steel, Dyno Tested Track Proven To Increase Torque And Horse Power
  • Value Added Direct Bolt On/ Weld On set up with Gaskets & Hardware included
  • Precision Computer CNC machined flanges with DUAL-TIG welded construction
  • Backed by Limited Lifetime warranty from manufacturer defects
  • OBX Genuine Products Design and Quality of OBX U.S.A

PPE Engineering Long Tube G35 Exhaust Headers

ppe engineering g35 headers

Our comment: PPE offers a range of customisable G35 exhaust headers, including these long-tube units. PPE can also coat your new headers in ‘JetHot’ ceramic coating to decrease thermal performance loss. This can be produced in a variety of finishes.

PPE opted for 1.75″ tube runners and a merge collector that exits at 2.25″ and transitions to 2.5″ in outer diameter.

On G35 owners clubs these headers have a good reputation, with claimed gains of 10whp when tested with performance camshafts. PPE themselves claim a 3.5whp increase on a stock VQ35.

The only reason that these headers are not awarded five stars is due to the higher price tag.

Manufacturer description:The PPE 350Z/G35 long tube headers are designed for maximum power and midrange. Testing on a 2006 VQ35 showed an increase in top end power and midrange torque over shorty headers and testpipes.

Proven to make more power than any other header on the market for the 350Z/G35.

  • Equal length tubing
  • 304 stainless steel
  • 100% TIG WELDED
  • 3/8″ thick laser cut flanges
  • Formed collector with spike or optional merge collector
  • Mandrel bent 16 gauge tubing
  • Porting at flanges
  • Flat sanded head flanges
  • Optional ceramic coatings
  • 1yr warranty

TOMEI Expreme V2 G35 Exhaust Headers

tomei g35 headers

Our comment: TOMEI produces some great aftermarket parts for most JDM platforms, version 2 of the Expreme exhaust header is no exception. Excellent weld quality, high end materials and dyno tested results make this a great fit for your G35.

A nice feature is that this kit includes not only the fitting hardware but also a heat shield. You can read a great article about how they selected their tube design here.

TOMEI claim 5-15bhp (at the fly) from these headers, opting for a smaller 1.5″ pipe diameter to maximise air flow. Priced at a mid level, these are an excellent choice for your G-series.

Manufacturer description:The new Tomei Expreme exhaust manifold V2 design targets a sharper throttle response, a true race-exhaust sound, and increased power gains. Tomei tests their designs on both a dyno and in real road conditions in the Z Masters race series in Japan, so you know you are getting an exhaust manifold that gives you a competitive edge. This exhaust manifold gives you the high airflow you need for a better driving experience.

With the V2, Tomei has added a heat shield, thermal protector, and flexible thermal tube cover - eliminating hard-to-use thermal bandages - to the kit for added performance and to help reduce performance robbing heat.

  • The Tomei Expreme exhaust manifold V2 is engineered for maximum performance
  • The pipe bends are designed to maximize exhaust flow efficiency
  • The merging section joint angles have been flow tested
  • The smooth pipe layout
  • Bolt on kit

ISR Performance HGC Long Tube G35 Exhaust Headers

isr g35 headers

Our comment: The second of our budget headers is this offering from ISR Performance. With a low price point (just above the OBX headers), this product has a lot to offer. 304 Stainless steel is used for the pipework and a High Ground Clearance feature that places the collector in a position to maximise ground clearance is a great idea.

I haven’t been able to find much information regarding claimed power increases but the feedback from owners that have purchased the system seems very positive, with plenty of remarks on excellent fitment.

Manufacturer description:The ISR Performance Long Tube headers for VQ35DE/HR are designed to replace your factory header and catalytic converter. These long tube headers are constructed with 304 brushes stainless steel and heavy duty flanges. Designed with a stepped primary, these headers are built to retain as much low and mid range torque as possible while allowing for good top end horsepower gains as well.

The innovative High Ground Clearance, “HGC” design places the collector in a position to maximize ground clearance without sacrificing performance.

Each header features 2 o2 bungs placed downstream of the collector so that you can utilize your factory upstream and downstream o2 sensors. The downstream o2 sensor bung utilizes a flow restrictor to help avoid CELs.

You will be required to extend your primary o2 sensor harness to meet the new location which is lower on the header.

Our winner

Our winner is the TOMEI Expreme V2 G35 Exhaust Headers

I selected the TOMEI V2 as our guide winner because of its quality, performance gains and price point. Picking up a pair of TOMEI headers is a great choice for any G35 owner that wants improved power delivery, increased top end power and enjoys a great exhaust tone.

The headers are well built, look fantastic and come with everything you need to bolt right on. When combined with a free flowing exhaust system, the performance gains will be impressive for an NA engine.

Highly recommended.

With the Infiniti G35 more affordable than ever, it’s a fantastic opportunity to bag the awesome G-series at a bargain price.

Powered by Nissan’s 3.5 liter VQ-series V6, it’s undoubtedly gifted with one of the best engines of modern times.

Most VQ owners know that these masterpieces are capable of so much more than what they left the factory with, so why not strap a supercharger to gift your daily or weekend car with that extra dose of power?

Is a supercharger best for my needs?

Superchargers are known for providing a smooth, linear power gain, which makes them more ideal for daily and street use. They also provide zero lag and instant torque at the push of the throttle combined with increased reliability.

However, if you’re hitting the track or just want a more intense power delivery, why not also consider a turbo kit upgrade?

We’ve written this guide for those who want to know more about the supercharger options available on the market.

Before we start, here’s a supercharged G35 video to remind you of what you’re missing out on!

Let’s take a look at our G35 supercharger kits

To read more about any of these products simply click on the turbo kit name or photo.

HKS Supercharger Kit

hks supercharger kit

Our comment: Legendary Japanese tuning house HKS kicks off the first option in our guide. HKS are well-known for creating some of the best forced induction kits on the market and this is certainly no exception.

Combining great looks with reliability and the typical build-quality that HKS are world-renowned for, this kit is undoubtedly a great option.

We would suggest strongly considering this kit if you’re more interested in reliability than power figures. This could be the perfect daily driver as it’s the quietest and arguably the most reliable option on this list whilst pushing out around 350-400hp with supporting mods.

If the quest for ultimate power is your thing, make sure you also check out HKS’s V2 kit which is capable of running over 500hp with supporting mods!

Manufacturer description:With the introduction of the GT Supercharger line, HKS raises the performance bar by giving you a choice of premium-quality turbo or supercharger forced-induction systems.

For supercharger aficionados, our supercharger kits provide OEM-level engineering quality, combined with best-in- class reliability, efficiency and quiet operation. Performance delivery is linear from any speed as a result of the GT Supercharger’s Torque Response Traction Drive system.

You can be confident in your car’s driving performance when the GT supercharger is installed!

Vortech Supercharger Kit

vortech supercharger kit

Our comment: Vortech have put their years of valuable knowledge in the supercharging scene to create the ultimate kit for G35 owners.

Combining great value for money with fantastic build quality, reliability and customer service. Not only that, it’s also one of the easiest kits to install (around 8-12 hours).

With owners making an impressive 410hp from the kit and 440hp from the ‘Rev-Up’ variation, it’s easy to see why so many have made this their choice. This kit also includes upgrade options to gain additional power.

Manufacturer description:The G35 system uses Vortech’s V-3 SCi supercharger. Continued development in Vortech’s Lab resulted in the V-3 SCi. The “i” stands for improved and with its new patented oil control system and state of the art centrifugal compressor stage this V-3 literally blows away the competition. Industry leading 75% adiabatic efficiency SAE J1723 standard means less heat is being generated, reduced drive power and more net power is produced. Less heat also means better durability, easier on the engine than any turbo installation.

Vortech supercharger systems are a great value. Dollar for dollar, Vortech systems deliver more horsepower than virtually any other method of upgrade. Also, driven normally, gas mileage usually increases.

Vortech’s G35 Supercharger Systems are available as either a complete, fully calibrated bolt-on system, or as a Tuner Kit for custom installations at over 500 HP. And with Vortech’s many upgrade solutions, there is always more power when you are ready.

Videos:

See and hear the Vortech kit running 402WHP working its magic here!

Stillen G35 Supercharger Kit

stillen g35 supercharger

Our comment: Stillen initially entered the G-Series supercharger market with a ‘roots’ style blower for the G35. This meant that you then had to run a Stillen’s own, or a modified hood to fit the supercharger.

This, combined with the additional heat gains that came with the roots blower, it understandably divided opinions amongst owners.

Stillen seemingly realised that this was the case and released a brand new kit to the market. Combining Stillen’s quality parts alongside the Vortech V3 supercharger reviewed above, they eventually put out a fantastic product.

Given that Stillen decided to utilise the Vortech supercharger, we feel that it’s a testament to the fantastic piece of kit that Vortech have produced here. Given the similarities, you may well prefer the look of the Stillen kit over the Vortech to help make your final decision.

There are many variations of this kit, so make sure you choose the correct one!

Manufacturer description:STILLEN is proud to announce the availability of the VQ35 dual throttle body G35 supercharger kit. The VQ35 Supercharger shares most of the same components found in the VQ37 kit, and designed as a direct bolt-on to the 3.5L.

This supercharger system took over a year to develop and involves some revolutionary designs. This supercharger system is developed to offer the customer easy upgradability and installation without requiring a hood replacement to complete the installation!

Videos:

Here’s a video of the STILLEN G35 kit beign used on the street, the sound is certainly noticeable!

Our winner

Our winner is the Vortech Supercharger Kit

To pick our winner from this choice of G35 supercharger kits we looked at a number of criteria; ease of installation, power levels, upgrade potential and price point.

Based on these criteria we have conlcuded that the Vortech supercharger is the worthy winner.

Vortech Supercharger Kit

vortech supercharger kit

As an all-rounder, we felt that the Vortech Supercharger Kit was the best option available for the G35. It may not be the most impressive looking, but we feel it ticks every other box that potential owners will have in mind.

From ease of installation, value for money and upgradability, this will future-proof your G-series to ensure that you’re always at the top of your game.

We highly recommend that further research is done based on our guide. There are often additional parts, tunes or upgrades for base-level supercharger kits that may be either vital or purely suit your preferences.

Manufacturer description:This tuner kit features larger TD06SH-20G (900hp capable) turbos with a type 32R Front Mount Intercooler. The VQ35HR turbo kit includes all of the necessary hardware and parts to bolt right on to your car, including cast manifolds, racing downpipes, external wastegates, w/g dump pipes, a cast oil pan, and airinix intakes.”

“Because the turbos were designed to be used on lower boost stock motor applications as well as fully built race motors, it’s possible to increase the power significantly for serious performance gains. Users can enjoy flexibility when it comes to fueling options, with plenty of room to upgrade.

Our winner

Our winner is the JWT Twin Turbo kit

To pick our winner from this choice of G35 turbo kits we looked at a number of criteria; ease of installation, power levels, upgrade potential and price point.

Based on these criteria we have chosen the JWT Twin Turbo kit to be our winner.

Jim Wolf Technologies Twin Turbo kit

With the high quality of components, USA based manufacturing and support base, low boost twin turbo response, motorsports proven track record (the kit was developed on their own competition car) and price point the JWT Twin Turbo kit makes a very good case for itself.

The Turbonetics kit looks pretty decent and is very affordable for a turbo kit however you will be limited by the turbo charger if you want to chase more power with a built engine. The single turbo also suffers from more lag.

The two Japanese kits both look like great systems however retailers are running out of stock as they are becoming discontinued so finding replacement parts may be a struggle. The higher price point on both of these units also marked them down slightly.

So thanks to Jim Wolf Technology for helping out G35 owners looking for more power by putting out a great product!
