We’ve already taken a look into supercharging your Miata, but what if you’re looking for the crazy power delivery that only a turbocharger can provide? We’ve got you covered.
When Mazda created the Miata, they saw a gap in the market for the retro British-style sports cars of yesteryear.
There’s certainly no question that the 80s and 90s were some of the most revolutionary times in automotive manufacturing.
While the industry leaders were building some of the most fabulous creations of our time, such as the NSX and the Supra. Mazda decided that they needed a cheaper, more reliable alternative to their much-loved RX7.
This is where Bob Hall came into the equation, an American that was determined to bring a reasonably-priced sports car to the masses.
It’s unlikely that Mazda knew the true scale of what was to follow as they released it to various markets across the world. It would become known as the Eunos in Japan, the MX-5 in Europe, and the better-known Miata in the US.
As its popularity exploded, this humble two-seater sports car has since become an incredible icon for the motoring world when reasonably priced hooning is the goal.
In this guide, we’ll be taking a look at the various generations that have been produced over the years, as we prepare to reveal the turbo kits that will unleash the full potential.
Be warned; this will turn your sensible daily driver into a weapon that’ll leave you grinning from ear to ear every time you turn the key in the ignition!
Whether you’ve already got yourself a Miata, or weighing up your options when it comes to buying.
Let us tell you now that there are very few things which get the adrenaline rushing in life than a budget two-seater sports car with a terrifying power delivery!
With models such as the NA and NB more affordable than ever, it’s the perfect time to build your ultimate project car at a reasonable price. If you’re looking for something with stylish, modern touches then the NC and ND options are also fantastic alternatives.
Whether you’re looking to pull off big skids at the track or compete in a national Time Attack championship, the new-found power of your Miata will undoubtedly create the perfect all-rounder for your needs.
Before you take the plunge on a supercharger, you’re undoubtedly going to want to consider your coilover, wheels and exhaust options to build the ultimate package.
What’s in this guide?
Miata’s are one of the most common cars for carrying out DIY turbo modifications on, and there’s a vast wealth of information spread out across the internet for building a DIY turbo kit, whether you’re looking for enormous power or building on a budget.
However, we’ve noticed that there are very few guides that put the off-the-shelf turbo kits side by side to help you pick the perfect choice for your needs. Sure, a DIY kit may save you a few bucks, but if you haven’t got several spare weeks, or you’re not an expert when it comes to fabrication and technical knowledge, we’d personally recommend paying the extra bucks for a tried-and-tested method.
Not only this, but you can ensure that if you get stuck, the support from these companies will be second-to-none, rather than posting up on an owners club in the hope that someone may have a solution to your custom-based issue.
Turbocharging or supercharging?
Those of you that have already begun your research on the various methods of forced induction will undoubtedly know what you’re after, but if you’re still unsure, then make sure you check out our turbocharger vs supercharger guide to teach you everything you need to know.
For a quick summary, superchargers are the sensible option that provides a decent power delivery that is more than likely going to make your Miata feel like Mazda originally intended, with a little extra grunt!
On the other hand, a turbo takes more of a ‘guns blazing’ approach, providing a sudden surge of power, or if you’re opting for a colossal turbo setup, then expect a lot of spooling followed by absolute insanity. Especially in a car that weighs next to nothing!
We’ve already taken a look at supercharging your Miata, so if you think that this alternative forced induction will be more suited towards your goals, then don’t worry - we’ve still got you covered!
Turbocharged Miatas in the media
It’s not often we see turbocharged ND’s, but we think this one that TheSmokingTire has featured is a pretty damn perfect example!
Don’t go thinking this can be easily achieved by purely spending a few hundred bucks, but it does go to show that a turbocharged Miata is capable of causing some severe upsets!
Additional considerations
There’s certainly no shortage when it comes to off-the-shelf kits for the Miata, and the potential possibilities are endless if you decide that the DIY method is the best one for you.
We’re fully aware that there’s some incredible information online when it comes to DIY setups, but since there’s a lack of information regarding the best off-the-shelf kits, we’ve put this ultimate guide together to show you the various options so that you can head to the track worry free, and get stuck in to what matters most – seat time!
If you’re looking for big power, you’ll need to think about additional internal modfications. Lag issues will also need considering, as the bigger you go with the turbo, the longer the spooling time. For drifting, this is rarely practical.
It’s important to remember that before you push an engine to its limits with forced induction, you’ll need to carry out a compression test to ensure that it’s good and healthy. If not, any kit on the market could potentially see your next trip home on a recovery truck.
The Miata is arguably one of the most excited cars in the world, combine that with forced induction and you have a true recipe for awesomeness. You’ll need to spend some cash to get there, but it’ll no doubt be worth it in the end!
If you’ve not yet purchased your Miata and you’re not yet sure which generation to go with, our experience has proven that the NA and NB provide that raw driving feel that some people desire.
On the other hand, the NC is starting to become a real bargain, and is a much more comfortable and refined car. For this reason, it could quite possibly be the best all-rounder if you’re not too fussed about the early generation’s purity.
Although the ND is the biggest of the bunch, it’s capable of giving some stronger contenders a run for their money once you’ve strapped a turbo under the hood. A fantastic chassis, and with that extra punch it really does turn into a near-perfect car, but expect it to come at a cost!
Our final consideration? Make sure you factor in the cost of an uprated clutch, as you’ll inevitably need to upgrade it once the power starts flowing!

Our comment: Since you’ve found your way here, there’s no doubt that you would’ve already heard of the legendary Flyin’ Miata turbo kit.
Previously known as the ‘Voodoo II’, and one of the first-ever kits to the Miata market. Flyin’ Miata have been refining their kit endlessly since, to provide the ultimate option for NA/NB owners over the years.
This setup provides everything you’re going to need in a convenient, perfected package. Think of this as the ultimate NA/NB ‘bolt-on and drive away kit’, supplying everything you’re going to need to have your boosted Miata up-and-running.
Any searches online will bring up heaps of delighted customers that have been running this kit for thousands of miles with perfect reliability.
One of the main additional benefits of this kit is that it’s the only NA/NB option that is CARB legal, this means it’s emissions legal in ANY state in the US. Pretty neat, huh?!
In our opinion, there’s simply no better choice for those of you looking for a quick, easy, and perfected off-the-shelf kit for your NA/NB Miata.
Manufacturer description: “Easy installation of safe and clean power. Our Stage 1 turbo system – previously known as the Voodoo II – is ideal for someone looking for an easy installation, good horsepower, no emissions hassles and lots of upgrade potential. Expect approximately 160 hp at the rear wheels, compared to a stock 93 hp. This is limited by the size of the stock injectors. The intercooler means that you will keep all of your horsepower no matter how hard you run your car.“
“All of our turbo kits use the same basic hardware for super easy upgrade-ability. Every part has been designed taking performance, durability and installation ease into consideration. We don’t believe there is a better (or more complete) turbo system available. With our kits, you won’t be making extra trips to the hardware store for nuts and bolts; every part you need is included.“

Trackspeed Miata Turbo Kit (NA/NB)
- Manufacturer: Trackspeed
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NA 94-97, NB 99-05
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ????
- Purchase link: Buy your Trackspeed turbo kit here
Our comment: Our next strong contender is from Trackspeed, who are known for their incredible quality and reliability, have once again earned themselves a fantastic reputation with their turbo kits.
If this ‘DIY’ kit ticks the right boxes for you, then you certainly won’t be disappointed.
You will need to consider the fact that you’ll need to purchase several parts yourself, such as an intercooler system, turbo intake and filter and heat shields.
Don’t let sourcing your parts put you off, as they’re easy enough to find. Just bear in mind that it’ll require quite a few additional components to make it a ‘turn-key’ setup like the Flyin’ Miata kit.
If you’re fortunate enough not to have CARB-legal concerns, then this is a fantastic alternative.
Manufacturer description: “The wait is over. Trackspeed’s DIY EFR Turbocharger System is the result of seven years of exhaustive research and development into turbocharged Mazda Miatas, and it represents the culmination of everything we have learned since we started racing turbocharged Miatas in 2007.“
“By combining the most advanced turbocharger on the market (BorgWarner EFR) with a high-quality cast stainless steel exhaust manifold and stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust components, we are able to offer a kit which out-spools, out-responds, and out-performs the competition in every measurable metric.“
Features
- EFR-specific manifold
- BorgWarner EFR B1-frame turbocharger

MK Miata Turbo Kit (NA/NB)
- Manufacturer: MK Turbo
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NA 90-97, NB 99-05
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ????
- Purchase link: Choose your MK Turbo kit from the following options:
Our comment: At one time, it looked like MK Turbo was ready to dominate the Miata NA/NB turbo kit game. However, the power of the internet has left that somewhat in question.
MK Turbo has some die-hard fans, and although they’re commonly known for their incredible end-of-the-phone support and amazing kits. They seem to have perhaps grown a little quicker than they had planned.
Among all the positive posts from users, one sticks out like a sore thumb. Several owners have mentioned waiting a long time for kits for the quality not to be what it once was, combined with non-existent support.
We give them the benefit of the doubt, since the internet isn’t always right, and they have a vast amount of delighted owners. However, we have opted to strip them of a star for this reason, and recommend that you do your research if this is the ideal choice for you.
Manufacturer description: “The MKTurbo Complete Kit includes all the parts from the Intercooled Kit, plus intake and fitler, Force Flow injectors, MS3PRO ECU, MKTurbo Oil Line Kit, and a Wideband o2 for a complete drive-away kit!“

BTP Miata Turbo Kit (NA/NB)
- Manufacturer: BTP (Formerly BEGi)
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NA 90-97, NB 99-05
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ???
- Purchase link: Discontinued
Our comment: Another previous contender to the throne, BTP, or BEGi as they were formerly known, have also been hit with negativity from Miata owners.
Although this was once an alternative CARB-legal kit to the Flyin’ Miata option above, they’ve since switched components. Users are now claiming that this means their packages are no longer capable of passing the strict testing.
Combined with what seems to have been an extremely adverse reaction from the company, they seem to have caused quite a stir. What was once a highly-recommended kit has now been put into question.
We take what we read online with a pinch of salt, but the scales don’t appear to be weighing in their favor. For that reason, we’ve opted for a lower rating.
For this reason, this will be another case of needing to do your research, as it was once a well-loved alternative.
Manufacturer description: “The power series for those who are budget minded! The BTP-S turbo system is the perfect place to start when turbo charging your Miata. It is a non-intercooled kit, but can be upgraded later with minimal changes. The BTP-S kit will make 140 to 160 rwhp at 5-6 psi, depending on the exhaust and engine management.“
“The BTP-S kit for the 1990-1997 Miata comes set up for use with a MegaSquirt PNP or standalone ECU. The IAT bung can be plugged if not used, but while the MSPNP is slightly more set up it is truly the best part for the job. And, if the kit is ever upgraded it will work with whatever you choose to do. The BTP-S kit for the 1999-2005 Miatas will work best with the BTP ECU Reflash. It will work with stock injectors or upgraded injectors.“

CX Racing Miata Turbo Kit (NA/NB)
- Manufacturer: CX Racing
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NA 90-97, NB 99-05
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ????
- Purchase link: Choose your CX Racing kit from the following options:
1989-93 NA Miata (1.6L)
1990-98 NA Miata (1.6L)
1994-1998 NA Miata (1.8L)
1999-2005 NB Miata (1.8L)
Our comment: Ah yes, the infamous ‘China’ kit!
Now, fear not. We’re not going to be recommending that you buy the latest eBay special for under 100 bucks! CX Racing is known for being extremely cheap, but over the years, they’ve also become increasingly cheerful.
CX Racing made a note of the negativity surrounding the company, and have spent a lot of time, research and development, along with vastly improved materials to bring much-improved products to the market.
And the best part? They still come with a bargain price tag!
As far as off-the-shelf kits go, you’re going to struggle to find a better package for your budget Miata build.
You will need to think about engine management, as unlike the other options on the market, CX Racing is yet to introduce a management system.

- Manufacturer: Fab9 Tuning
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NC 05-15
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ?????
- Purchase link: Buy your Fab9Tuning turbo kit here
Our comment: Despite the NC being an incredible potential base for a product, there’s not a wide range of variety on the market when it comes to aftermarket turbo kits.
Fab9 Tuning is one of the companies that opted to fill the gap in the market, and they’ve done so in style.
This kit comes with an exceptional reputation from many delighted owners, and should certainly be a consideration for any NC owners that are considering opting for a turbo setup.
Manufacturer description: “We’re proud to introduce, without question, the best turbo solution available for the NC MX-5. A truly premium way to maximize the power output of your 2.0L or 2.5L powerplant. We started development with a very forward thinking “no expense spared” attitude and it shows in the final product.“
“The MZR platform is a much more responsive system than the previous gen BP engines and we’re thrilled to take FULL advantage of that with the unrivaled BorgWarner EFR turbochargers. These turbos are leading the aftermarket/OEM industry in performance and reliability – you get MORE power, SOONER with LESS boost and LESS heat output. With a built-in Bypass Valve that is designed to keep shaft speed high during shifts and the best performing internal wastegate V-Band housing on the market, we didn’t think twice about choosing EFR as the heart of the NC system.“

BBR Miata Turbo Kit (NC)
- Manufacturer: BBR
- Fitment: Mazda Miata NC 05-15
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ?????
- Purchase link: Buy your BBR turbo kit here
Our comment: Highly-regarded BBR brings their first kit to the rather small NC market, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint!
This complete bolt-on package will provide you with 100bhp gains straight out of the box and comes with the fantastic reputation that BBR is known for.
We’re not sure why, but Flyin’ Miata hasn’t opted to get on-board with this kit like they have the ND variant. It may be worth checking with BBR that it’s suitable for LHD cars and whether it meets CARB-legal requirements if you need them.
For convenience, the Fab9 kit may well be the more practical choice for our US readers, but we would still highly recommend checking out this alternative.
Manufacturer description: “Since BBR launched its NC MX-5 turbo conversion in November 2013, over 400 of our clients (April 2019) have opted for our fully installed and DIY packages. Our turbocharged conversion delivers efficiency and flexibility unrivalled by other forced induction means, such as supercharged etc. The BBR Stage One turbo conversion delivers an incredible 100bhp+ gain running just 7psi of boost pressure with over 200lb.ft of torque available from just 3000rpm to 7000rpm!“
“The BBR MX-5 turbo is the only conversion fully designed and developed in-house and manufactured in the UK. Our bespoke BBR cast iron exhaust manifold, internally wastegated genuine Garrett exhaust housing, custom made carbon fibre turbocharger heatshield and utilisation of the OEM air box base with BBR OEM look airbox cover are just a few of the key components that separate the BBR turbo from far inferior imported options (with external wastegates, fabricated exhaust manifolds etc). There are no gimmicks, just great hardware of OEM quality, ensuring maximum reliably and longevity, with turbo boost pressure preset to the desired level.“
Features (Based on Stage 1 Kit)
- BBR bespoke Garrett GT series ball bearing turbocharger (360bhp plus capability) - optional polished compressor cover available
- BBR bespoke cast iron exhaust manifold
- BBR stainless steel downpipe (optional BBR stainless steel performance exhaust available)
- BBR high-flow lightweight front mounted aluminium intercooler with factory look black intake pipes (polished and custom colour options available)

AVO Miata Turbo Kit (ND)
- Manufacturer: AVO Turboworld
- Fitment: Mazda Miata ND 2016+
- Turbo configuration: Single turbo
- Value for money: ?????
- Purchase link: Choose your AVO turbo kit from the following options:
Our comment: AVO brings the first turn-key solution for ND owners that are looking to unleash the full potential of their cars with a boosted setup to our guide.
AVO was keen to keep an OEM-look with this setup, while also managing to maintain a reasonable price point, both of which they’ve managed to achieve.
Available in both LHD and RHD options, this excellent value for money kit provides 40% additional power over the stock setup with no modifications.
If you’re not looking to splash big bucks, but want a great value no-frills kit, this is certainly worth considering.
Manufacturer description: “Stage1 Turbo Kit made by AVO Turboworld for the 2016+ ND MX-5 (2.0L Engine). It is made for those who want a full turn-key solution including ECU and base tune. The kit made by AVO, unlike other manufacturers, has a nice OEM quality look.“

Features
- AVO 18/49 Turbocharger with Ceramic Coating
- AVO Stainless Steel Cast Exhaust Manifold with Ceramic Coating

BBR Miata Turbo Kit (ND)
- Manufacturer: BBR
- Fitment: Mazda Miata ND 2016+
- Turbo configuration: Twin-scroll turbo
- Value for money: ?????
- Purchase link: Buy your BBR turbo kit here
Our comment: UK-based BBR has earned itself one of the most exceptional reputations in the tuning industry. Flyin’ Miata has teamed up with them to provide this incredible turn-key LHD kit for the US market.
In true Flyin’ Miata style, they’ve once again managed to make this kit CARB-legal in all 50 US states. This is undoubtedly strong a selling point for those of you that require it!
BBR has provided a re-flash for the stock ECU along with the package. If you don’t own or know anyone with the Ecutek tuning interface, then you’ll need that to load the tune onto the computer.
We do NOT recommend running a turbo kit without correct management under any circumstances!
Manufacturer description: “Easy installation with no drilling or changes to the fuel system. It’s the quickest turbo install we’ve ever done, and the quietest we’ve ever driven. You can’t hear any hisses or other noises, the car just digs in and pulls hard.“
“A custom 3071 provides lots of power headroom with fast response thanks to the twin scroll design and the ND’s high compression. It’s mounted to a tubular-style cast manifold for best flow and durability. Hard intercooler pipes take the charge through an air/air intercooler to maximize density. The high flow downpipe mates up to a stock exhaust or a higher flowing alternative. Expect a gain of at least 70 hp and 70 lb-ft of torque with a stock exhaust.“
Features (Based on Stage 1 Kit)
- BBR bespoke twin scroll hybrid TSX30-71R turbocharger including jet turbine specification fixings
- BBR bespoke cast iron twin scroll exhaust manifold
